  • Serial or Parallel…Spool or not.

Having a few computer with the cutter at the moment. Read the software manual. Left me with a few questions.

If you have the option with your cutter. Do you use a serial or parallel cable?
The manual recomends a serial cable via a com port, every time. Says LPT port is more suited to printing.

In my software I have the option to Spool the cutting job or not. If you spool the job you can use the computer again more quickly. If you don`t spool the job, you have to wait for the information to download to the cutter before you can use the computer.

    Whats everyones preferances.

I do use both but by choice serial, as it allows comms to and from the cutter. ie after my cutter has set itself the width of the cuttable area is displayed in the software. (this is displayed on my cutter as well but not to the same accuracy and isn’t diplayed for long.)
Parallel is faster transfer. (they will both fill the buffer and be waiting for the cutter on big files)
I send to spooler as it does free the machine up to get on with other work.
You can then cut the file time after time without having to resend it.
Saveing the spool file means you can cut a job again from the spooler alone.

    I use the serial

Strange thing is that Graphtec supplied a new parallel cable with the plotter
but no serial. I found the parallel lousy, can’t remember why. I think it had trouble interpreting stuff from the ‘puter. Also needed the Lpt port free for my printer

I ended up using my dog eaten serial cable from my old graphitype dinosaur machine and it works great. In fact I’ve still got it

i run signlab 6 & connect the PC to the plotter via serial port. I also use the spool option, as like you said its faster & allows me to set up the next bit to be cut.
Scanner & printer & signlab doggle are all USB.

I use the serial port as well and spool, runs nice and smooth for me

I use the parallel port on my Roland CJ70 because it’s a printer as well, and the serial on my old Roland PNC100 which is really good with Signlab e6 as it has the capabilities of polling the plotter for the size vinyl loaded. It then represents this on the screen most useful, infact one of the best features of e6 in my opinion.

    Allan,

Signlab e6 and polling the plotter for vinyl size – is this a new thing???

Could the previous versions not do this??

I use Flexisign and thought this was a standard thing as i’ve always had this option
