  • Scrap vinyl storage solution!

Posted by Dan Osterbery on November 4, 2016 at 1:03 pm

We have used many different systems for our scrap vinyl over the years, but we were never happy. I had to have a few days off and i asked one of my guys to create something for the scrap vinyl that is easy to use and cheap.

He cut up our spare core rolls and glued them together and created this system. With different core lenghts it makes it so much easier to see the size scrap you need, rather than rustling around in a bin until you find the size you want.

We love it! it is really easy to use, and its makes sure the vinyl is stored in a way that it can be used again. Just thought we would share incase anyone else found it useful!

    All the best

    Dan

Genius idea Dan, Love the way you can make it to fit whatever space you have available too.

I just recently got fed up with my box full of mixed up bits getting more crammed, so ended up just taking it all down to the local nursery school for the kids to have a play with & will start from scratch again so may have to adopt this.

Thanks for sharing the idea :praiseyou:

I give all my scraps to local schools, Yes it probably all mounts up i can’t be bothered saving them all on the off chance – maybe thats why i’m skint lol

I love your enthusiasm. Few years ago I was worst in keeping off cuts. Now I only keep black and white as scrap. The rest goes in the bin.

We tend to tell customers there’s a 5m minimum order on colours, so they soon decide that Tomato red on the shelf is just as good as the Cherry red in the swatch book. We order 5m in if they insist and pay for it.

Every few months I loose my rag with rolls and rolls of vinyl and we have a ruthless sort out (literally throw the rolls out of the unit), the rolls of obscure colours with most on are kept, so we end up with 10m of a Grey, Dark Blue, Light Blue, green, Yellow, unless we know it’s a specific colour for customer, and there’s a likely chance they’ll need it in future. The rest get lobbed in the bin.

We did have someone ring up asking to collect our scrap vinyl, but they never turned up so we just bin it now, I don’t have space to keep it.

if its scrap destined for the bin
we call the local nursery or any schools etc ask if they would like it free

you would be suprised how much work we get after that

I know it’s a waste, but every time my big box of off cuts gets full, I take it to a local pre/primary school, a different one each time.
The kids love it and really appreciate it, it gets it out of my way, and they get to have some fun with it too

We drop the really small stuff off at a local nursery, but we have written three vans this week almost entirely from scrap and that does make a case for keeping rather than discarding the scrap!!

    cheers

    Well done Dan, great idea!

It’s not the money that bothers me it’s the throwing out of good material that I don’t like. Saying that those three van are almost pure profit :smiles:

That’s a great idea Dan…. mine usually end up in a big box which is not ideal

With another email of a second price increase on vinyl this morning, those off cuts are becoming ever more valuable.

Hugh, this is another idea for your left over roll cores, and the shelf is made from scrap 10mm foam!!

ok, here is the next step in our blue peter badge improvement works! We have run a cable across the warehouse so we can have drop down power either side of the vehicle we are working on. Using a big pallet that we had some boards delivered on, we created our two vehicle stands. The big one has everything on wheels. Paper, tools, cleaning stuff, polishing and cutting materials plus machine, power, etc.

The little one has tools, cleaning, etc. The plan is one stand per side of the vehicle with the member of staff, hopefully as everything is on hand it will improve productivity. we had to sacrifice an office chair, and a pallet, and an old bit of bent board, but we only really bought wheels etc. Everything else, recycled or upcycled.

Next job is two drying racks that can winch up to the ceiling above the print finishing section. Photos to follow!!

Great size unit you have Dan, very high roof.

How cold does it get out there during the winter out of interest?

not very, we are in Menorca. We have no heating, heat in the summer is more of a problem, vinyl can go like chewing gum in the hottest part of the summer months!

I’ll send some of our cold over to you then, going to be 6 degrees here tomorrow.

I love Menorca, but haven’t been since the kids were small.

I liked the sun chasing, so if it was cloudy where we were we would drive to the other side of the island where it was usually sunny.

Nice place to be Dan

Next blue peter project complete! We have made two drying racks on a pulley system that we can raise and lower to allow prints to dry in peace and be out of the way before lamination. The pulley systems are bike / kaykak lifts from amazon at a whopping 8 pounds each. The frame we made from a large pallet that we had boards delivered on, and the cables are from removed window pockets when we replaced with the LED versions. It works so well that i am going to have the frames made in aluminium to stop the bending of the wood frames. Dimensions 300cm x 100cm, and if the prints are longer it just bends round and along the next wire! Easy, quick and cheap. We love it!!
