    Hi Gray

casual wages vary greatly. When my brother was a student he did hotel work in the highlands and was paid roughly the same wage but he had free food and room, ok he was fed on what was left after the guests but it was still free. I feel its a bit hard to make him pay for his room.

Someone else here may be able to help but the minimum wage payable to a person is dictated by age etc. As far as I am aware it must be about what he is being paid or maybe even lower! £4.30 springs to mind.

Who says Scots are tight fisted?

    Sounds about right Gray…

I agree with Stuart about the room though. I feel that should be thrown in when he’s working there, that’s usually the case…

Sounds about right Gray, typical hotel/bar work crap pay, treated like a slave and fed on the scraps the paying customers leave behind, hope he has a great time 😆 could be worse Lamby could give him a job then he would be skint and worked to death 😆 😆 😆

    How old is your son??

£4.90 sounds fair to me Gray, I do agree with the others about them charging board, a bit off if you ask me.

The minimum wage here for 18 -21 year olds is £3.60/hour rising to £3.80/hour in october 2003

For age 22 and over its £4.20/hour rising to £4.50/hour in October 2003

I’ve got two kids that work in the hotel industry Gray and the wage you have quoted is about right for this kind of work. My eldest has also worked away from home at a couple of places and always had accommodation chucked in for free so if they are charging him then thats not really fair. Mind you if it is a small hotel and all their rooms get rented out and they don’t have staff quarters they are going to have to charge something.

Gray don’t wish a more nannying society on us than we’ve already got 🙁 but whats wrong with restaurants with smoking and non smoking sections ?its getting ridiculous, if people want to smoke and kill themselves thats upto them and I’m not going to whinge and moan about people smoking in HUGE public spaces like airports, if you don’t like someones smoking then either ask them to move or move away yourself, the worlds gone mad how soon will it be before they want to burden us down with more ridiculous rules and regulations and no mate I don’t smoke, never have and never will. 😎 😀
