Posted by Phill Fenton on April 23, 2007 at 11:02 pm

I had a fella came into the unit this morning and said; "Scottish Elections Next week – Who are you going to vote for?"

My immediate reaction was to say there’s not a single T0sser I would vote for (but I managed to contain my self and instead politely asked "why"?)

Turns out he was the local SNP candidate looking for a freebie sign job done on a van of his.

    I turfed the bugger out!

Who would you vote for and why?

Like you Phill, I struggle to find a good reason to vote for any of them, when I was in the Navy I always used to vote Conservative because they were the only party which gave the Armed Forces any decent pay rises but to be honest in Scotland it was a bit of a wasted vote!!!!

These days I would really like to abstain but that is really a waste of time as well, we need to organise a Country wide campaign and get everyone to go to the polls and spoil their paper.

ive never voted in my life…

we had a candidate in our place today, arguing they would not pay VAT because the girl on the phone never told them it was +vat
they were told like it or lump it… but still kept arguing out the point… oh and saying i am such and such and represent this and that in your area…
BIG DEAL… , the panels are here, if you dont want them then fine, dont pick them up, but if you do, you WILL pay the VAT.

panels were picked up at 4pm :lol1: :lol1:

same here Rob. I do plenty of work for politicians though. I seem to attract them somehow. Usually recommended by someone or other somewhere…..

They do tend to be a bit tight for the most part.

However, I did a lot of work for John Howard’s (Our Prime Minister – Liberal) boys and girls here in Qld at the last election. The most professional people I’ve ever had to deal with. Nothing was any problem, and they paid very promptly out of their advertising allowance.

At the same time I did a bit for Mark Latham (the last Labor PM Hopeful) and it took me forever to get paid. I ended up ringing and threatening the accounts dept and the bloke confided that there is not a lot of communication in his party… wish he told me that before I started working for them. Won’t be so keen this time round if they approach me. Or, it’ll be COD.

All polys are basically the same though. Promises promises. 🙄

you’re right there Martin. It is wasted up here.
It’s either Labour or SNP up here and I wouldn’t vote for either …………. so in my case is there any point in voting??? Not that I think or believe there is a party who’d do a better job 😕
They’re all out to line their own pockets anyway.

Marcella, I only voted for them because as I said before they looked after the Forces better than any of the others so I really only had my own interests at heart, I think your right about them all being as bad as each other. I haven’t actually voted for a candidate for a long time now but I do always go along and spoil the paper, that way it has to be counted as a non vote. If everyone did the same thing they would quickly get the message.

I’m planning to do what you have suggested Martin i.e. a spoiled vote. I agree with you there’s no point in being apathetic though. All of us that are disillusioned should put in a spoiled vote to demonstrate our dissatisfaction with the current state of politics.

Not sure If I will get the chance with sign UK being on next week though.

Anyone fed up of all the screen printed boards on all the lamp posts?

I’m seriously thinking about cutting up a sheet of Corex and making my own "Party Board" and cable tieing them to a few lamp posts 😀 could be a giggle :lol1:

Anyways I’ve never voted, not clever enough to understand all the lies 😛

I’m not sure that Emily was a feminist Shane. At least not as we understand the term today.

She was a Suffragette and her only interest was getting votes for women.

It’s the local elections that are the difficult ones. I can’t count how many fliers I’ve had through the door and it’s all crap. It’s difficult to gauge what these people actually achieve when they are elected and very difficult to know whether they are worth re-electing.

It is only my opinion but a lot of people suffered more than we can imagine to make it possible to put a cross in a box, I think it’s the least any one can do, even if it is a case of the lesser of the evils or spoiling the paper, were here and should be counted.

Working in town today there was the good old coerx board advertising our local ssp candidate, who I happened to go to school with (I’m only 27 by the way, this seems very unfair!) and my work mate said ‘I’m gonna vote for him then’

    me ‘you crazy, the ssp?’

‘I don’t know anything about it so why not’

    ARGHHHHH!

    rant over!

gavin, i know what you mean mate, but i take zero intrest in politics… there for know nothing about who promises what… etc so i think going in and voting for just anyone is a bit silly…

one of my best mates of 20 odd years is a candidate for our area, i wish him all the luck in the world, even though i would never vote for him. :lol1: :lol1: he knows that too, as he asked me if i would be voting for him… i told him "no chance" :lol1: :lol1:

Fair enough Rob. Most of my friends don’t bother to vote either… I should find some other things to fill my days maybe!?! Maybe stand myself! (only joking as I really couldn’t arsed… maybe that makes me a good candidate though?)

I know that apathy reigns everywhere, but it remains true that if you ‘don’t vote’, then you are actually casting a vote for the winners (think about it)…..therefore you have no cause for complaint! I also have no time for the bullshit from politicians and i am not affiliated to any party ( except the UKSB one) but I always vote and always will! Democracy wont work properly on 50 or 60% turnout.

Ah, what the hell? Time to get a bit radical.

Remember the old American War of Independence rallying cry? "No taxation without representation" or something like that? Well, I see it differently. I think there should be no representation without taxation. That is, if you don’t pay taxes then you don’t get a vote.

I’ve never quite understood why those who make no attempt to contribute to society are allowed any input into how it is run.

    No pay – No say.

Doesn’t work for people made unemployed by government policy, try coal mining for a start 🙂

I don’t see why not. Do you think we should still be paying for redundant lamp-lighters then?

I realise that coal mining in particular may still be an open sore with some people, but literally millions of people have had their industries disappear over the centuries, due to government or economic changes, and some just down to pure progress. That doesn’t, or shouldn’t, give anybody an opt-out of contributing to society for the rest of their lives.

Harry democracy gives you the freedom of choice, so whether to vote or not is a democratic choice I would have thought.

Mind you I do believe that politics and religion are the worlds two biggest evils.

it may be many things Nigel, but that isn’t a definition of democracy. to be a democrat (with a small d) implies ‘taking responsibility’ for your choice, including exercising your vote. I think ‘taking responsibility’ is at the core of all the problems of the western world.
Anyone know of a supplier of ‘sturdy’ soapboxes?

I agree, lots of industry has disappeared due to technology alone. Look at the jobs that computerization has taken away. Can’t blame governments for that. Hell, most of us wouldn’t do what we do now if it was not for the humble computer. How many talented hand painters has it sent to the wall, or destroyed incomes as a result? Only the other day I was talking to a calligrapher. She has closed up shop because of desktop publishing software.

Also, I think that so many politicians are Solicitors and Barristers these days, every one knows they are paid liars anyway, so few have faith any of them can lie straight in bed, leave alone tell the truth.

Voting is compulsory here, is it not that way over there too?

I’ve always voted as I agree that if you don’t vote then the team you really don’t want in power have a better chance.
I’ve got to the voting booth before still trying to make up my mind!!!!

    GRRRRR RANT TIME.

We got a card from the Post office through the door the other day about a letter having insufficient postage.

I’ve just been to the post office, paid my £1.24 and its a bloody leaflet from the SNP, very very annoyed. Trying to get through to anyone to reimburse me is a joke. I think I’ll be knocking on a few doors tonight 👿

    Sorry for the rant.
