    any help please
a itailjet formula 50 scooter which i am trying to fix for a friend.

on the carb is a electric cold start device which i dont think is working how do i test it is the question.

it will start if i squirt fuel in the intake and will run well, restarts when warm on the button.

just wont cold start on its own

spent too long looking at wrong manuals.

got any photos of the bits? don’t know how it works but maybe able to work it out if I see it.

I guess it’s a thermal or solenoid thing?

solenoid thing with 2 wires and sprung loaded plunger.
i expected it to click when switched on if cold ?

i cant find what controls it.

have you tried putting volts to it? may be a temp switch somewhere?

do you get power to it?

i meant to put a volt meter and see if there was a resistance on it before i gave up, but gave up to easy.
the reason i got involved was cos it kept flooding which is now cured and it was running for a hour last night, ok
    but would not start today.
trouble is i am fixing other peoples faults as i go and only getting half a story.

Chris its only basically a 6 volt coil, power direct from the battery listen for it clicking & then try to start the bike. If it starts you know that you are on the right track. From that point it will be a case of finding the control switch or possible earth problem. Are you trying to start from Kick start or electric start only if batteries are slightly flat on these bikes it can cause all sorts of electrical problems.

    hi kevin
no clicking and cant feel it operate if i put my finger on it and turn on the key.
they fitted this new carb as they could not cure the flooding which it still did.
a bit of pipe was braking down and bits in the float needle valve i fitted a new pipe and extra filter

just thought you said 6 volt are some of these things 12v ??

    wrong carb?

    Hi Chris
could be a 12v system but same principle for checking it. The scooter i worked on i think was 6v but can’t really remember but similar carb from what you describe. That was a carb & starting fault, bad running down to diaphragm split in carb and bad starting to a battery not being fully charged. Dealers recommended charging the battery every 2-3 weeks. Build quality on these things is a disgrace

then the kids are told do this and that to make it go faster and non of them have any mechanical experience.
    i will check further tomorrow

    thanks

    Hi,

It is the electric cold start if you undo the two screws and you should find a spring, plunger and a diafram inside you can see if its working by taking it apart plugging it in and switching on the ignition. on some models you cal push the plunger up and own when its apart.

see if you can trace the wiring back to what controls it Chris.

found the sensor but a spare connector as if somebody has taken a bit of loom away.
worked the system back to this connector then nothing.

on standard 5 pin relay why would they put a diode across 2 pins which is bust anyway.

The diode is to stop back feeds I think, common on relays now.
