  • sandblasting of sandstone perplexity..

    Hi

A customer for whom I printed t-shirt with a chest logo has dumped out side my door a piece of sandstone which he would like me to re-create his logo by sandblasting it and then put it as a keystone in a wall.

Now he knows I have done a bit of sandblasting but I have never tried sandstone, only smooth stuff like slate, marble, granite etc…

The logo is only 7" circle with lots of text about 3/4" caps high and although the sandstone is fairly compact and fine grained – no way will a sandblast mask stick on it.

So I have given thought to painting the face with something like PVA builders thingy, enough coats to get a smooth surface then attaching the mask and blasting. Once done I would hope to re-texture the PVA’d areas with a wire brush or electric wire brush…

So, does anybody out there know of a better idea before I set out on this course of action..

    Thanks in anticipation

Well so far so good, 4 coats of water based varnish (plumped for that in case PVA turned out to be a better sandblast resist than the stencil itself) and now stencil is attached nice to the smooth surface, just waiting for some new grit to arrive then give it a go.

Actually 4 coats of water based varnish and the mask stuck very well….. unfortunately 4 coats of water based varnish DID turn out to be a better sandblast resist than the stencil itself so no flippin joy there…. 🙁

Eureka moment at 4am this morning, shall now try either interior fine filler sanded and a coat of oil based primer or some easy sand car body filler and then apply stencil this to see if I can get a result……. :lol1:

Nothing healthier than muttering to yourself…………..sign of a genius at work……….. :lol1:

How are you going to remove the glue afterwards, as sandstone is quite porous……….

Aha… neglected to say Graeme that prior to putting on the varnish I applied stone sealer to the block, the varnish peeled off in one lump.

With the interior filler I am now thinking of putting in a little yellow (sand ) colouring but I expect I should be able to remove it from the pores with a wire brush or a quick blow over with the gritblaster…. or at least I hope so anyways… :lol1:

Be careful with the wire brush as you can leave bits of metal behind that will rust. Get yer hands on a brass (spark) plug brush……
