    Hi all,

I’m after the above fonts if anyone could send them over it would be gratefully appreciated.

I have searched the boards for it and there are plenty of Rotis Serif fonts but not the Semi Sans.

I may get away with the serif but im waiting for the customer to confirm this is okay. (i have the MAC fonts of it but no longer have a MAC d’oh 🙄 )

    Thanks

    Gareth

    Gareth,

I think I’m right in saying that the committee decided some time ago that providing fonts was a no-no.

You may have more joy if you ask for specific text in a particular font, someone might then provide it in eps ai or cdr etc format….

    Here’s hoping..

Thanks very much for the reply Gareth, i didn’t know this i really should sit and read the rules one day, apologies.

I will wait to see what the customer says with what fonts i have and if not i will post the text as you suggested.

    Cheers bud

    Hi Gareth,

I don’t even think its one of the site rules, it just became a fashion to stop doing it.

If you do a search, as you have, you will find it was once upon a time common practice to provide fonts with gay abandon, but some time ago some thought it wasn’t in the spirit of fair play to provide copies of fonts for free that others may have paid for genuine copies of, so it pretty much stopped happening.

Not a bad thing all told.

    Cheers!

I’ve supplied several on here….Don’t think theres anything wrong in that.
I would also supply the ones I’ve paid for as this cost was passed onto the customer.

It’s not site rules or even fashion. The issue is copyright.

Exchanging free fonts is not a problem, but you leave yourself open to legal action by accepting or giving away copyrighted ones.

The same goes for vehicle outlines. But that’s even worse because the author Brian Hayes is a member here. He wouldn’t be happy for people to give away his work instead of buying their own copy. And neither would I for that matter because if Brian can’t make a living then he’ll pack it in, and I would lose an invaluable resource.

It’s the same as a customer getting you to do a design for their sign, then having it made by someone else.

Can I have a copy of your cs4 or corel?
    same thing isnt it?

If a customer has paid for a font, then to a certain extent he is entitled to some exclusivity, and he may not then be happy if you give it away?

There are plenty of free fonts around, and you can usually find something similar to the foundry ones, so if a customers specifies it must an exact match, then they must be prepared to pay for it.
that way the font creators keep creating, and you can add a profit margin.
Having said that, most of us will have fonts on our system that are illegal
copies, but do we look at the copyright notice before using them?

If you already own the Mac version of the font I can convert it to a PC version. I personally don’t see any real legal issue with converting a font that you already own. (or is that a gray area? any opinions?)

    Hi,

The client emailed me the text converted to outlines eventually so all is resolved, I take on board all of your comments but isn’t it swings and roundabouts? Evens itself out in the end!

Sorry if I’ve opened a can of worms

    No problem Gareth.

It is an ongoing issue, and an occasional re-surfacing, for those who may not have read previous threads on the subject, never hurts. 😀
