  • Roland sc-500 with Eco Sol Ink – Rubs off downunder too!

    Hi All,
    We have just only registered
    ( Gary & Tim Knight – Father / Son Signmaking shop )
but have been reading this forum for only a week now,
since only discovering it after trying to find info
on the new Roland sc500 with eco sol ink and retrofitted heater.

Firstly Robert, its a great site, well done!

The quality of the print is great on cheap vinyl and on quality cast.
Problem is you can rub it off with ease, and mark the surface with
the back of your finger nails. 👿
I realise people have posted the same thing, I just adding to the list from
    our new experience. 😮
I have emailed our supplier to try and get some feedback from roland
but I wont hold my breath.
We have been clear coating with Tautlfex brush on clear
and acrylic lacquer clear sprayed on with pressure pack can
and spray gun for larger areas with success and which is fine,
just that we weren’t expected to have to do this for all jobs. Big or small
flat sign or vehicle and are a little disappointed after reading the brochure and not holding up to its speel.

Any how rambled on to much. Sorry!
We maufacture all signage in house
    Signwriting, Screenprinting, Vinyl,
digital printing ( we have a roland pc12 also )
Routering ( Multicam II ), fabrication and welding ( steel & alum )
Engraving ( Laser Epilog 75W) and full house neon bending plant.
So hopefully we can help someone or assist us if we get stuck.

Look forward to reading the posts.

Good to see you posting so soon though, keep it coming 😀

    Hi Gary & Tim,

We have recently installed a Roland Soljet Sc-500ex (with Heater / Feeder Unit), not had a problem with the durability of our prints in relation to marking. The problem we have is finding suitable ICC Profiles for Oracle/Avery stock. What brand of vinyl do you prefer to use? Have you had problems with printing on clear?. We utilise the services of the panel beater/spray painters next door to “‘Clear Coat”‘ our outdoor prints using 2-pack enamel/hardener should it be required as its a inexpensive alternative to lamination.

    Hi Vincent,

As previously mentioned our quality of prints is really good.
at preset using Orajet 3651 – grey backed 5 year and orajet 3651 in clear
    and both print fantastic.

We have tried clear coating the white and clear with

    Taulflex clear, digi clear.
The clear peels off on the print like sunburnt skin
but doesn’t peel off the vinyl.

Acrylic lacquer effects the print and when tested the ink comes off the vinyl.

the only way it has worked is using the 3651 clear laminated over
either the white or clear prints.

Pretty frustrating. It might as well be an oil based printer.
Everything has to be laminated. If you rub or be slighty hard handed
with the prints they mark far to easily.

Roland technicals have been down and suggests we try more media
and clear coated everything. Thats fine but its not the machine
that was sold to us. ” only clearcoat for extra durability ”
more like ” clearcoat everything ”
the supplier of the machine is trying to flog of a laminator
What a load of “C%&P ” shouldn’t have to buy a bloody laminator
    for a solvent printer

Just using the machine at present till be find an alternative
probably and Mimaki full solvent! Have seent the results, pretty good!

let me know how you go

dont ask me why but it works for me i now only laminate stuff that is going to have a hard life
i have prints on my own car un laminated

I recently purchased a Versacamm which I presume uses the same inks as the SC540. I print onto Metamark MD5 vinyl and the prints are very impressive.

I can rub the prints till my finger burns and not mark the print. I can only damage the print with something hard and sharp and that is scoring the actual vinyl.

I would still laminate prints for agressive environments such as vehicles just to give some extra protection, after all, ANY print is only a thin layer.
