quote Martin Oxenham:What calibration do you mean ?
HI there Martin when you load media and you calibrate it prints 13 fat letter T and then has a scale under -5 -10 -15 etc etc ill try and get a photo

i was told when i brought the printer that when you load the media the 1st thing you do is calibrate so that you have the right settings and you can see if your going to get banding etc but of course every time you calibrate your wasting media. So i was going to make a chart when i use different medias so i know what setting it needs to be on

Once you have calibrated a media you can save the setting on our XR640 it’s in the menu I thinks it’s the 1st option I’m not at work at the moment but if you need to know I can let you know tomorrow, save the profile and name it so you can recall it the next time you load the media.
Hope this helps

You don’t need to do this every time !
I think I’ve only done it once in three years and often change material. -
I agree – Shane if you’re reading off the crop marks to cut you won’t have to do this everything (unless you start experiencing alignment issues).
We acquired the same machine (second user) and we had severe cut alignment issues to start with. As we then found out this was down to a) the grit rollers being incredibly dirty and b) the previous owner stealing all the pinch rollers before selling. We cleaned and acquired a few more pinch rollers and everything was fine.

My understanding is that this setting adjusts for the differences when media feeds. A full roll of vinyl will cause more resistance than a 5m roll end. The wrong setting will either show white gaps or dark overlaps depending on which way its set. We tend to do this each time we load a roll onto the machine. I don’t think it’s a waste of media though as we tend to feed the first 150mm or so through to make sure any finger prints or muck from storage are well through before we start to print.

Andy thanks for the reply that was my understanding what i wanted to know though is it the same setting everytime for the same media?
-
It’s my understanding that it changes as the roll weight reduces. A 50m roll of banner will offer far more resistance than a 5m one.
As I say we tend to do it each time we put a different roll on the machine.

Andy that is what i will continue to do then.
many thanks shane -
some media due mainly to there thickness feed at different rates so this compensates for it
Md5 is md5 so should always be the same for that media put in thick 500gsm banner and you will normally see banding.however the vs does not suffer from banding like the older machines so most standard media will be the same only really needs adjusting for the really thick stuff or very thin paper.
Andy allowing the machine to pull vinyl of the roll while printing. although it will do it I don’t think its fair on the feed motor so making it ware quicker. imo

Chris many thanks for your input i will take it all on board i really dont want to get any banding, i use it for labels and banners etc and when doing a banner i always pull some slack as i was concerned at the weight of some rolls.
this is way i joined the forum as there are so many different ways of doing things.
thanks again shane
