    Hello Rodney & Shane

I am looking for a little (local) help in the form of do’s and don’ts, my youngest daughter (Tilly) is heading in your direction in the next week, first S.Africa then Oz one year out in all. She is traveling with another girl and have all their accommodation and flights etc for country to country covered. It’s on-the-ground information that will be helpfull that I’am looking for.

This girl has already lived a life of heart break that hopefully none of us will ever have to. She has just passed her first year exams with 11 distinctions and 1 merit which is remarkable under the circumstances, she is trainning for the highest level of specalist child care for children with disabilitys. This will enable her to go into family homes where a child needs 24 hour care and release the parents/parent so they can have a little time to themselves, perhaps go out for a meal and enjoy each other, to say I’am proud and protective over her is an understatement. On top of this she has worked many nights and most weekends and has paid for all this trip herself and as yet not asked me for a penny, (but there is still a few days left).

You can contact me by email: info@aarow-signs.com any information and correspondence would be very useful and greatly received especially during the trip.

having trouble adding photo of daughter to this post (add option ???)

    Best regards Russ

Very little to add here in terms of what to be wary of in South Africa , where is she going to here? Obviously the usual caveats for a lone girl or 2 apply , just be careful. Dont ride in the black minibus taxis , they drive like lunatics. Don’t venture out into lonely areas by themselves or hook up with stray or suspect travellers.
She must not go to the black townships by herself , they are generally very dangerous areas and a white or foreign girl is at risk there.
Otherwise its a marvellous place and quite cheap as well if you have pounds or dollars.
It’s pretty much like any place here , Johannesburg is a little dismal , Cape Town is marvellous and very beautiful , there are 1000’s of things to do here and a very good tourist infrastructure.

    G’day
I guess that seeing as she’s coming from SA to Oz, that she is likely to come to Perth. If she is, then accomodation is quite varied, from the Sheraton, to back packers hostels. There is plently to see here. (you guessed I’m from Perth, right?). But just tell her to be aware. This is such a beautiful place, but also the crime capital. Give Northbridge a miss after 10 pm. It’s a real shame, cos most people here are very friendly, and will help. But I guess that as we have a failrly easy lifestyle, there are also a lot that don’t want to work and take by force.
There was a spate of drink spiking goingon the pubs a couple of years ago, I’m sure that it still happens.

If the girls are here sometime between Sept – Feb then I could probably arrange a twilight sail on the Swan River, – it’s awsome – bbq after and dancing all for free. ‘part from that, the only downside of coming here first is that the rest of OZ is all downhill after!!! ( Do I sound biased?). If you want any other info just ask. John

Hi Russ, sorry for the late reply, have been away for a few days. Anyone who knows me here would know I don’t have to be asked twice for an opinion 😳 In fact, I don’t have to asked at all!! 😳 😳 😳

You don’t actually say where about in OZ your girls are staying. As John says, Perth is a lovelly place (I was born there many years ago) (and yes John, obviously biased 😕 )

There are some places in some states here that even I would not go to, and I am neither young, attractive or naive.

Much the same advice as Rodney tho, they have to keep there wits about them wherever they venture as there is always someone who will take an advantage in any town.

My advice would be to stay in the larger communities/cities and travel with reputable holiday groups. If the are coming to brisbane, staying out of China Town and the Valley, would be the best advice I can think of for young women on a first trip.

Sydney and Melbourne are bigger places with bigger ethnic populations. Kings Cross, Paddington and Wooloomooloo in Sydney were places that I would not venture when I was young, but I suspect things are different now. Perhaps some of our other aussie sign guys and girls could contribute to this post with suggestions for their own state.

Another thing to remember that a lot of 1st time tourists don’t seem to understand is the distance between our cities here. It is 1000klm from Brisbane to Sydney for instance. I met a tourist from the states the other day that arrived in Brisbane and hired a car to drive to perth. He thought it was an overnight drive. 4 days later he is still driving.

We drive on the left side of the road here, and our road rules are, I believe similar to your own, so they should not have too much problem getting around if they want to drive.

Given that they are two young women, If you’d like me to have my wife keep in touch with them whist they are here, just let me know. I know she’d be happy to help.

Certainly if they are coming to Brissie, I’d be happy to show them around.

    Cheers Russ,

You can contact me directly on admin@dsi.net.au if you have any further concerns.

Thanks John, and yes Perth will be first stop, I think they will just play everything by ear after that. It aways helps to have a local contact even if it’s just piece of mind and thanks for your kind offer to arrange a sail on the swan river, will be in touch.

    Thankyou, Russ

Hi Shane, was’nt sure because of the time difference if you were in :sleep3: or perhaps on a long weekend, If anyone should have a 😳 😳 😳 it’s me for my clumsy grammer. Advice given by all has been well taken onboard and much appreciated many thanks.
Girls will be in OZ approx 8 months and intend to visit as many places as possible. It will be nice if she comes your way and maybe you get chance to meet her, she is a real live-wire and a fantastic people person. I would also like to say thanks for your kind offer of email contact.

    Thankyou, Russ
