  • Robert Horne / Paperlinx – again – is it just me?

for the past couple of years, 95% of my stock vinyls have been oracle 551, with the exception of the odd colour ‘not in stock’ or ‘we don’t keep that one’, or sometimes a customer choosing from another range, ultimately 99.9% of my vinyls come from them.

Just opened a 25m log of black during the past week and cut a job – it felt different & weeded poorly but with little time I put it on the signs and installed the job. today I’ve just cut a small job and found the same.. didn’t feel nice – which I thought strange, I went and checked the roll to find it was 651 and not 551 – as I know I would have ordered. I’ve just dug out the invoice and it’s on there as 651, as is the 20m of white. Yes… I should have paid more attention to the delivery notes but, one just assumes that someone is doing their job right. I open enough to check the colour corresponds to the order / note, cover it back up in the case of a roll that’s not gonna be used right away, and put it on the racks, I shouldn’t have to unroll it to check they’ve sent the correct grade or measure it.

I ordered 7 rolls of film that day, I always state "it’s all oracle 551 and all at 630 wide" when placing a vinyl order, the yellow, blue, maroon, orange & clear were all 551 so why was the most important rolls of black & white in 551 too? I’ve found my notes for that day and only 551 was written on my pad.

I only use 551 for my black & white stock films, I wouldn’t have bought 651 unless a small qty for a specific job. Personally I think that the stock of 551 was low or out and I was substituted 651 instead.

A phone call resulted in me being asked "can I not still use it as it’s still a 3-4yr film?" well of course I can still use it but why should I have to? I didn’t order it, I use 551 as it’s a much nicer film to work with in every way. I don’t want to use it. But as it’s a 6 week old order they won’t take it back.

Suppose ‘that’ll teach me’ when the films I’ve just put up with an all 551 job shrink different or possibly won’t match in a years time.

Is it just me having problems?? Am I being unreasonable? I really do hate moaning – especially twice in a matter of weeks but, I’m wondering if maybe I’m expecting too much of one company, perhaps I should spread the burden of responsibility for delivering the correct materials farther afield. 🙁

I reckon they have a high powered staff meeting every morning. One of the subjects on the agenda every day is "what can we do today to upset Hugh". Wouldn’t be surprised if they even have an employee of the month award for the most amusing daily wind up 😕

Hugh we put labels on our boxes stating that goods need to be checked on delivery, not just to make sure the material is correct but more importantly if any goods are damaged by our courier then there is a 72hr window from delivery for us to raise a claim against the damage.

On a side note the time spent by you typing your post would have been better spent checking your vinyl delivery 😉

To be honest Nigel – you’re correct but, being here on my own I am often in the midle of something when the delivery comes, I’ll take it in, do a quick check to be sure the colours are as per the order, the delivery notes are folded in such a way as to only show the colour of the roll and the meterage, I can’t see the 551/651/751 etc part of it, after that brief check I’ll crack on.

Just upsets me that (in my opinion) part of an order has been substituted with a lesser grade product and I’ve not been informed, , as a result I’ve put a shorter life product up that I’ve charged for.

I have to be honest & say I have never checked to see they have sent the right grade of vinyl, colour as Hugh did yes but not what series it was. I haven’t ever had a problem with them sending 651 instead of 551 & don’t know RHG policy on substitution is but do know that other vinyl suppliers will send out something else without telling you. Annoyed me that the Company didn’t inform me of the change via a phone call as well but it wasn’t RHG.

I don’t get a good feeling when using Robert Horne anymore. We actually stopped using for vinyls a very long time ago now and use them as little as possible. What really summed them up for me was when the rep visited! He said were very pleased with your account, things are always getting better, even though I’d stopped using them about 3 months prior. Really felt as though the rep only dropped in to tick me off a list and then went again!

I also believe service has gradually fallen over the past 2 years.

George, if you can keep the driver there whilst checking the delivery list,

You have got to have stapled him to the wall, or summat!

…there’s a reason I use William Smith…(and turn down other sales reps…if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.)

They’ve only screwed up one order in 5 years with me and replace/credit any material I’m not happy with and check stock live on the phone when ordering before sent out on a next day even at 6pm. I have a great working relationship with Gill who looks after her customers brilliantly.

OK…no oracal but then I do prefer 3M anyway for day to day vinyl.
