Risk Assessment for cherry picker

Hi…struggling a wee bit on this one, my normal ones need to be more specific to cherry pickers and working at heights….any help greatly appreciated 😀

Basically the higher you go the more thorough YOUR assessment needs to be. I presume you are hiring the machine, does the lending company have a generic one for you.

Otherwise your looking at breaking the job down. set-up, operation, obstructions, safety, lifting weight, training, public control, environmental conditions (weather ground etc) and a bit on recovery in the event of failure. get a bit of paper and brainstorm "what if’s" from the view point of an ‘idiot’

Look up Adrian Yeo, as I think he is more into H&S through his day job, but this might be limited to chemicals, not sure though.

Also if your operators are Ipaf qualified they will have info in thier log books etc that may help. If they are not Ipaf trained then that is a big obstacle on completing you risk assessment

Thanks Graeme, Kevin…………..both have IPAF certificates so I’ll maybe fill in that form and if it keeps being a problem will contact IPAF or hand over the sign 😉

Yup – it won’t be long before you need a Phd in working at heights before you can fit a sign…

…. but that’s all part of the plan isn’t it 🙄

Working at heights even applies to any temporary platform / step even if it is only 6 inches off the ground!! The regs have been tightened up over the last few years when heights used to be based on anything over 2 metres up.
Consider some of the following
The surface and safe access for the cherry picker.
The actual height you are working from.
Pedestrian and vehicular access around your work area. Cordon off the area, warning signs etc.
Falling objects – the sign, your hard hat, tools etc.
Weather conditions.

Make sure you have all the inspection certs from the cherry picker supplier and make sure they are in date!!! (I have know equipment from hire stores turn up with the wrong date on and the delivery driver trying to convince you it was a typo and everything is OK. If something happens you are liable)
