rigid stencil material advice please?
Posted by James Martin on August 12, 2013 at 8:02 pmHello
If a customer asked for a set of 10 inch numbers for spray painting or rolling paint onto a wall.
What sort of material would you’all recommend?

Hi James
i have used 1mm PVC before cut with router (think RH call it Penta PVC) or a Polyester material would do as well. You may find its cheaper to buy a set in Laser cut ones are on Flea bayKev

HI Keven thanks for that.
Can get a hold of 1.5 mm extruded pvc. do you think that would cut it?

you can get hold of stencil kits for approx £10
made from metal
or
we have just had a stencil made from Grenville engineering laser cut out of steel (1 metre square) for £90

How you going to cut it James? Unless you have a router you are going to have to find someone to cut it for you. Might be cheaper just to buy in ready cut stencils as Denise has suggested.

as suggested above or…
use off cuts of vinyl.
stick to a sheet of 1/4 inch plywood or mdf.
draw round the letters with a dark biro pen.
drill a hole in each letter,
jigsaw out the letter with jigsaw with wood cutting bit.
file and sand paper off the rough…job done. 😀
or stick off cuts of vinyl onto magnetic panel.
then free hand cut the letters out the panel using a stanley knife.job done. 😀
Here is an old tutorial i did about 7 years ago on making stencils.

Just had a thought, UKSG member Gary Gray in Cumbernauld would have done them for you James. One to keep in mind for future. 😉
