  • Retail Sign Shop insurance? Where from….

Posted by Joe McNamara on October 3, 2006 at 7:45 am

    Hi All,

I’m in the process of opening a retail sign shop on a busy road, vehicles, small signs, printed t-shirts, numberplates – that sort of thing.

I’ve rang several companies in the last few days to arrange contents insurance, public liability and plate glass cover, but as soon as I mention "Sign shop" I get a silence…..followed by them putting me on hold to go and check if they can do it.
None have been able to do it so far!

Spoke to another signmaker up north for five minutes yesterday and he recommended NFU, but rang them last night and they referred me to a local NFU broker about 12 miles away.

I don’t want to just get a "retail" shop policy, as I bet they won’t pay out if they find out I’m manufacturing signs (in the event of a claim)

It must be possible to get this type of insurance – there are plenty of retail sign shops about (not to mention the franchised shops like the Sign-A-Ramas), and they must get their insurance somewhere!

It’s doing me head in – I have a versacamm in a crate still in my unit, and can’t get it set up without insurance!……

    HELP! 🙁

    Cheers
    Joe

Try Rossborough insurance brokers in Guernsey. Sorry, don’t have number to hand.

    Hi Joe

I run two Franchised Print Shops called Kall Kwik and we also do a bit of signage

    Our insurance Brokers are:

    Whitman Gowdridge
    Leicester
    0116 278 5881 (speak to James Boucher)

They have a good package for our industry – I’ve tried to beat it several times and failed.

    Regards
    John

Join the Federation of Small Business and use their business policy which I think is unbeatable.

    Hi Peter.

I tried the FSB two years running. All enthusiasm until they got the proposal then I never heard another word from them. Not even the courtesy of a ‘thanks, but no thanks" call. 🙁

The NFU & FSB are good for certain stuff, but like all other products, shop around and choose the one that is best for your needs.

The insurance benefit offered by the FSB is provided and administered by Towergate Risk Solutions Warren Hill, so when you ask for a quote you are dealing direct with them not the FSB, so it would have been TRS Warren Hill who would have not had the courtesy of a "thanks, but no thanks" John.

All the same, it would be good to give feedback like that to the FSB so that it can be taken up with the Service Providers, as it is unacceptable!

    Chris.

If I can Get up to Glasgae I’ll buy you a pint at the brazen head ( as long as yer not from the blue side :lol1: :lol1: )…
Otherwise we’ll go somewhere neutral !

Lambie can come along as well as long as he stays off the breezers, and doesn’t wear high heels or lipstick!

    Cheers
