  • replace panels or use existing?

Would welcome your advice. I have a 12 x .610 mtr sign to revamp. Its opal with vinyl lettering 50% coverage into a panatrim frame – 4 panels, hanging strips etc, possible about 8 years old all in reasonable condition. head office rebanding, will mean a full digital print over the whole lot.

Is it best to take down the old boards, strip of old and apply the new digital print or would it be better/quicker to do new boards, have got a 50 mile round trip for this job. Customer reasonably happy to be without a sign for a few days.
What do you reckon would be easiest or best?

    Thanks

Depends on what customer is willing to spend. If he does’nt mind paying for new perspex, then go that way. You’ll save a lot of time on cleaning down the old stuff anyway

If its about 8 year old, I would go for new panels. If the vinyls been on for that long as well, might be a pig to clean up.
Labour will probably come to same or more than cost of new panels.

I have gone down both avenues & believe me Peter & Simon have it right, replace panels & find other work to spend your time on instead of all that elbow grease that you will need if you decide to clean them.

Wouldnt even think about cleaning the panels

    wouldnt repair the sign

quote for a new one explain why ……

Corporate image, how customers perceive you, image etc

(less the hassle for cleaning etc) but I would chrage them for removing the old sign. Repairing lightboxes is a nightmare

Replace them mate and you won’t regret it. Using the old ones could turn into a nightmare and not worth any savings, if any

    Always replace the panels.

You can sell this on the basis that it is cheaper than removing, stripping, cleaning.

Also if the guy had them for 8 years, the cost per year was pretty cheap so why not have new, with the benefit of knowing they’ll last another 8 years as the old one’s must be starting to get brittle ’cause of UV etc.

Also he won’t lose the sign at all if he has new panels.

I get the same issue with banners where customers want whole banners stripped and remade to save the cost of the banner. It’s not worth the labour. I’ve even undertaken to do this and then supplied new banners!!!

    Thanks for that Peter

Got to admit have made a couple of costly blunders with cost of labour vs materials recently.

Interesting with the banners -and on slight tangent – I just got a deal for banners with a local theatre company, they have monthly productions and a tight budget. Banners have a mixture of variable text – the play, prices and dates and fixed text and logos for their theatre company and booking details.

We have 4 sturdy pvc banners for the fixed text and have done velcro on panels for the variable monthly stuff, it keeps the cost down for them but has kinda hooked them into us for for the panels. So far they seem to like it. I also like the repeat business.
