I have been asked to replace a glass panel on a Pub Sign. carved gold leaf wooden panel 12′ x 2′. What type of glass should be used and how thick. from the broken pieces left it looks like it was painted on the reverse can this be done with vinyl instead.

    any advise well received.

Got any photos Neil? if the glass was gilded then no way would vinyl compare, depends on the customer I suppose.

if it has to be glass i would use a laminate glass or toughend glass.
because you are working with this stuff, i would advise you to ask for the edges to have polished or ariste edges. this will stop you cutting your hands. toughend glass is the more exspensive of the two.
if laminate is smashed it shatters but stays intact. toughend is like a windscreen of a car. it shatters into millions of tiny peices.

    Hi Neil,
I still do this type of work and would suggest as Rob says, use toughened glass, no thinner than 5mm.The glass must be kept clean, any finger marks will be seen. You might be able to make a paint mask as a template for the painting of the glass, two coats of paint is best. Make sure that when the glass is fitted that any joints are sealed otherwise water will damage the paintwork. I also put spacer s between the glass and the background sign. Any more advice….. just ask .
