• Removing Spraypaint

Posted by Marcella Ross on November 30, 2006 at 11:52 am

Anyone tried to remove spraypaint from a Dibond ali panel? A customer has had a sign vandalised and the spraypaint is over the vinyl and backing. I was wondering if anyone had successfully managed to do this or is it a case of a complete new sign 😕

Will more than likely end up cheaper doing new.
    Two travels(remove/reinstall)then clean down(if possible)and re-letter.
Compared with new board and lettering and fit

Meths, white spirit and isopropyl alcohol. They’re the first things I would try as none of them should damage the vinyl. Sometimes a good scrub with soapy water will remove it. I did that once when someone sprayed my brother’s car.

I’ll give it a go with some meths then and see how it goes.

    thanks 😀

T-Cut or some sort of rubbing compound (Feracla G3 etc) is least likely to damage the vinyls Marcella.

Would require a bit of elbow grease tho. 😕

If its proper car paint you wont get it off no matter what you use without hours of work, 2pak/celli car paint isnt meant to come off once on, even small car jobs in me bro’s body shop take at least a hour to rub down to the primer/bare metal and thats using air tools ie: wet n dry on a rubber disc drill. 😕

I’ve had a similar situation with an industrial estate directory board – spray paint over the aluminium panel and the vinyl lettering.
I was able to remove 95% of the spray paint using cellulose thinners with a very quick wipe or dab, followed by a few minutes for the thinners to evaporate and the vinyl to harden off (after it had softened up).

It was a challenge getting the spray paint off from the middle of the letters but with little patience, the panel looked acceptable to my customer who was more than happy to pay my bill for an hours labour rather than for a new sign.

As one of the other members mentioned, car paint is not designed to come off a properly prepared surface. Chances are when the perpetrator of the deed got his/her spray can out, the sign probably had surface dirt on it and wasn’t primed so that may help.

Just bear in mind that the cellulose thinners may take the gloss off of the vinyl/substrate so you may want to try some Tee cut to polish up the surface again. 🙂

another way round this is get some sellotape and place over the lettering right to the edge get a rag (not soaked) in thinners and wipe down the edge of tape doesnt take long to evaporate…take sellotape off nice clean finish 😀 i had plenty of practise once…i spelt a word wrong on 500 double sided correx signs….this method worked a treat 😀

    Wow………….

Nicola – how long did it take you to correct the spelling mistake on 500 boards?

I once mis-spelled ‘unauthorised’ on 500 health and safety signs 😳

we chopped them up and used them as ink scrappers in the end 🙂

they rest probably found their way to a car boot sale.
