  • Removing chalk from Black board vinyl

Posted by Gavin MacMillan on October 6, 2011 at 2:06 pm

We have a job come back that was an a-board with a blackboard vinyl panel on it. The customer has been unable to remove the chalk that they applied (chalk pens) I’ve since sourced chalk pens in a pack and a remover (all supplied by plex) and I’ve got some tests going to see how the length of time effects removal. Anyway the main issue is that the customer is correct, the remover wont even look at what they have already on the board (I don’t know the brand of pens they used but may need to look into this).

So really looking for any tips to get the existing stuff off? Preferably without damaging the material!

    Cheers,

    G

Hi Gavin, have you tried washing up liquid & water? Sounds silly, but may work. Chalkboard vinyl is a pain, due to the rough surface. I have given up with this stuff now.
I recently made new menu boards for our pub, with areas free to write specials up. All printed on white vinyl, white text black background, laminated with normal laminate. We are using the pens you have got very successfully on the menu, works a dream and cleans off with water.
I would be tempted to laminate some black vinyl and laminate for your customer, just start again!

    Sorry not more help!
    Lorraine

By the way, whatever pens you use, you will get ghosting on the chalk vinyl if its on for more than a few days.

Thanks Lorraine, I’ll give this a try with laminated black. I did say to the customer that it was unlikely they get them 100% clean, but when I seen them I understood the complaint!

    Hi Gavin
I was told about this problem when I was making some chalkboard vinyl signs so did a few tests a while back.
The stuff that got rid of all traces on the Metamark vinyl I was using was Ceramic Hob Silicone cleaner from my kitchen cupboard.
    It was actually this stuff

We were trying to clean up some the other day and after trying most solutions etc. It was a damp microfiber clothes that did the trick

Chalkboard pens used to be available as both solvent and water based not sure if this is still the case but would make a big difference to what was used to remove.

Thanks guys I’ll have a play. I realised after a bit of thought that the laminate idea wont work on this occasion as they are outdoors so washing of with water isn’t a good thing!

Could you not just re-cover the problem with more chalkboard vinyl?
But I realize you’re trying to figure out the best way of erasing the messages.

That is an option Jill but the stuff isn’t cheap! I’m happy to do that if I do test and know the same thing wont happen again.

I’d definitely be interested to see your findings as I’ve had this problem in the past luckily the customer decided it was their own fault with no input from me, they were more just asking for some advice or if I sold a product to clean it better.

Right, basically I tried a few things and Mr Muscle Window and Glass cleaner has done the job. Cleaned my tests easily and cleaned the top level of my customers graphics of no problem. There is still some pretty heavy ghosting from the 2 versions of info they had on previous but I guess this will fade over time and I also don’t know if they have used something that has made this stay on more.

Thanks for all the options and for your suggestion Stuart as that was what made me try every cleaning product in the building!

    Cheers,
