  • Removing 20 year old adhesive from aluminium – what works?

Posted by John Hughes on August 8, 2012 at 3:48 pm

We have just stripped an aluminium trailer (a Airstream).

The vinyl, which was more like foil, has been on the trailer for 20 years
but left an adhesive residue which we cannot shift.

We have tried 3M adhesive remover, meths, white spirit and petrol ! and MBX
    but with no joy.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks
    John

sponge soak in Tar & Glue remover
leave it 15 minutes, sponge soak again.
leave it 5 minutes, sponge soak again…
1 minute later using an old nylon squeegee scrape the gunk glue off and wipe onto a paper towel until all clean.
if you find its beginning to dry up, just sponge soak and repeat.

once done, wipe down with meths or isopropyl to clean off the Tar & Glue remover

you can buy Tar & Glue remover from most good car valet supply outlets. 5 litres about £15

    Cheers Rob

    It’s on one of these,

May have to get some strips of foam and tape over the glue because lots of it 🙁
