  • Really stupid beginner question about converting to curves

Posted by Liam Pattison on June 25, 2009 at 12:11 pm

    Hi,
i use to work in a sign shop some time ago, now i’m starting to cut vinyl on my own.
I just can’t remember if i’m always supposed to convert text to curves before cutting it.
Do you only convert text to curves if you want to edit the shapes within the font in some way or do you always need to convert to curves before cutting text.

I know it’s a really silly question (sorry), i just can’t quite remember.

I’d really appreciate it if someone could clear this up for me.

    Many thanks

    Liam

No, you can cut it once it has a hairline.

You don’t always have to convert to curves, just like you said, only really if you want to edit nodes to change the shape of some letters. Remember some font might require welding though if letter are touching each other, namely script fonts.

    Hope this helps

Well, well, well. It seems that no matter how long I do this job, there is something to learn.

I though it was necessary to convert to curves because the resulting postscript outlines were what got converted to HPGL for the plotter blade to follow.

Or does it depend on which software? Because, on our system, if a line is in the file, even with no fill or stroke, it will be cut.

Also bear in mind when you convert to curves it will usually have a adverse effect on the quality of the font. Only convert to curves as you say if you are altering the font, or if you are exporting to give the file to somebody that doesn’t have that font.

That’s absolutely brilliant thanks. I had cut a few things as a practice, but just laid out my first proper job (two transit connects). So i wanted to get everything 100% correct before i cut it all out.

I really don’t know what i’d do without all your advice,

    thanks again

Also if you convert to curves you lose the font information. So if you come back to the job at a later date & need to change the text you need to remember what font you used. Annoying if you have made a spelling mistake!

I normally make a layout of the sign, then pre cutting copy it all, and so all weld etc. that need doing, and then if changes need to be made in the future I can always still edit the original text without losing what font i’ve used.

Sometimes I get lazy and forget to do this though. 😕

But be aware that the centre of underlined text is not true centre, always outline or expand text to establish true centre.

That’s correct, I also have to convert as my cutting software does not read fonts 😕
