  • Re-cycling backing paper

Posted by Phill Fenton on April 9, 2015 at 10:27 am

Just had a visit from the council to examine how we handle our waste.

We discussed the backing paper which has a silicon coating – my understanding has always been that the silicon coating makes this non-recyclable but the council official questioned was this the case? He has taken a sample away and will advise me whether or not the backing paper can be recycled along with other paper products and I will let you know how we get on.

Meanwhile – anyone else have any experience of this?

here in France, I’ve askeed many times various persons in charge of recyling, wastes… none of them had the same clear answer, does it looks like the same in UK?. Last week I installed artwork on a vehicule used by a company in charge of controlling bins content, he told me for sure: not recycle-able. At least in the recycling factory here in the area because the process is too complex to extract the silicone part out of the paper.

Hey vinyl manufacturers: what about working on a recycle-able solution for backing paper? The amount of wastes is so huge that it’s worth investigating. The same for masking tape.

Had the same problem years ago so it just used to get picked up with all other rubbish, we looked into recycling again last year and our local council now picks up our bin full of silicone paper every week for a fraction of the cost of mixed waste. 😀

Same as Gary…we use Veolia and they have always taken our backing paper as a recycle material

Same as yourself & Ewan Phill, asked a few times over the years (last time about 6 months ago) & have always been told that it can’t be recycled.
I can’t recycle sawdust at the local tip either, tried a couple of times & been told that it will blow off the conveyor into someones eyes. still trying to come up with the best way to dispose of it rather than put it in the landfill, might even just spread it about a bit at the woodland close to the flat, someone on another forum said they use it as a mulch in their orchard so that seems like a reasonable idea.

I was told by our local recycling company that the backing paper couldn’t be recycled by them and they didn’t know of anyone who could either, same with the transfer tape and weeded vinyl.

    Hi Gary & Cheryl

I would be interested to know, do you have separate bins from Veolia for recyclable
    & non-recyclable waste?

I have always recycled my cardboard separately (vinyl cores & packaging) by taking it to a site.

    Thanks

    Chris

All our waste goes in a recycling bin, we don’t have a general waste bin at all. They take all scrap materials including backing paper, weeded vinyl, foamed etc

    Thanks Gary

I currently use Veolia and have a small wheelie bin for general waste.
I will check out the recycling aspect with them.
