    Hello

A few years back there was discussion on the boards about software that could turn a picture into a tonal image made up of lines with the darker parts of the image represented with thicker lines and so on.

The idea being that the image could be weeded with vinyl.

You know what my next question is gonna be. Can anyone remember the discussion and/or what the software was?

Far as I can remember the one with lines was not possible as the software was no longer available.
Here’s a tutorial using a formula for dots. I gave this a little time but could never get it to work properly for me. Good luck! 🙂 Would love to know how you get on with it.

My sign design software has this feature. If you want to email me your image, I’ll try and process it and email it back to you as a vector file.

Vector magic is actually not too bad, but I’ve noticed some results can be pretty poor especially with straight edges. If it’s just a simple logo yeah def go with that 🙂

James don’t know if you will be able to find a copy but vinylmaster used to have that feature. Think it was still on vinylmaster 2.95 but it has been dropped completely from version 3 which was a complete rewrite of the whole program.

James – take a look here. I know the process you’re describing but can’t remember what it’s called or where to get it. Done using horizontal strips if I remember correctly?

This is a similar approach and may do it for you.

    Hi thanks everyone

This is a bad example of the effect I’m looking to achieve.

Ive got latest illustrator so have live trace but was cutting some coach lines for someone the other day and there is just something interesting about parallel lines.

Neil look what I just did, nice one!

Its a great wee skeleton program and you have to convert the dft or whatever file to pdf and and then a bit more jiggery-pockery in the pathfinder palette in illustrator but I think I can make it work.

    Cheers

    quote Harry Cleary:

Harry – I think that would have been Halftoner, but they’re both good. Very small apps and don’t need installing (single exe files), so it’s easy to try both. Drag and drop an image onto them and set a few parameters.

Cheers Neil and James, I had a quick go of one of them but couldn’t get anything near what James had done.
Will give it another go over the weekend when I have time to play. I have a project coming up that it would be ideal for.

The older versions of Coral Draw could also do it.

Trace by Wood Cut or some such. I have C14 on the work computer, and C15 at home – neither has the function anymore. Corel 12 had it, possibly X3 as well.

Would have been V12 as that had Corel Trace a stand alone programme. X3 moved over to powertrace which was integrated into the main programme. I personally felt Powertrace was better for us signmakers in gerneral regarding accuracy but I know some preferred the stand alone and the extra features.
