Rant CSCS Cards, NVQ’s, and jumping through hoops.
Due to the nature of the work we’re being asked to undertake now, we’re increasingly getting asked for H&S documentation, CSCS cards, and a whole manner of other accreditations.
To get a CSCS card now, we need a minimum NVQ level 2 in Signmaking… so I have contacted the nearest college who provides this course, who I don’t think could find their way out of a wet paper bag, let alone educate anyone in producing a sign.
Considering it’s now a ‘necessity’ to get on some sites to have CSCS cards, and it’s therefore essential we get our NVQ’s why is it so hard to actually get it sorted.
I understand there’s a requirement to improve H&S on sites, I get that this is the system we now have to go through, but it seem’s so disorganised it’s nearing impossible.
All I want to know is how much, how long, and generally how do we get a bloody NVQ!
Has anyone else here gone through the process of getting their NVQ, CSCS cards, CHAS approval, or Safe Contractor recognition, these are all things we’re looking to achieve.

I rarely work on sites for this reason, usually I’ll quote a labour rate for a subby who has the accreditation, £400 a day usually scares them off -condiering it’s usually just hoarding or a health & daftey sign, and they fit it themselves – job done!

The CSCS rules & levels change all the time, each time I renew mine it’s different requirements and different categories!!
It looks like you may be able to get a 1 year temp "experienced worker" card while you go through the motions of H&S certification / NVQ’s etc
If you need to put H&S stuff in order then let me know as I know a H&S consultant who is about as practical as you can get i.e. minimum fuss, disruption etc

We do that with the smaller jobs, but some of the larger customers need to see all these accreditations prior to even requesting a quote.
If we had them ourselves it would streamline the process, and provides the sub contractors had their cscs cards will be ok to go on site.
Had a price of £1300 each to get the NVQ, then the cost of the CSCS cards, with CHAS on top too.
It’s a considerable chunk of money, so we’re still debating it. We may ditch the NVQ and CSCS cards, and look to get CHAS/Constructionline and use subbies who have their cards.
Seem’s like a well thought out process that will alienate 99% of smaller signmakers.

hope you have plenty of this type of work because you have to jump quite a few hoops for Chas & Construction Line best bet is to take on a consultant to do the paperwork because it will bog you down & take you away from earning money. The CSCS card has always been a con for sign makers wasn’t even recognised on the Olympic Site. They want a NVQ in sign making but the actual on site work is normally fixing and very little to do with making a sign. The Health & Safety test is multi choice and is common senseKev
