What better excuse to visit your son in Australia than to compete in the gruelling 15,000km London – Sydney car rally? Which is just what Bruce Lyle, Chairman of Merson Signs in Glasgow, did during the summer.

Bruce and Jimmy McRae (five times British Rally Champion) left London on 4 June and arrived in Sydney a month later. With Jimmy driving and Bruce navigating they negotiated Europe, India and finally Australia. In the lead right up until day 22, a breakdown in the Australian desert saw them come in a very respectable 11th, in a rally where just finishing is a major achievement.

Cox Plastics, part of the Robert Horne group, and a Merson supplier for many years, were delighted to ease the cost of participation by providing the materials for the vehicle graphics. The Avery 900 Super Cast vinyl ensured durability and formed perfectly to the contours of the Toyota car, without the risk of shrinking or popping out of the deeper recesses.

Bruce describes the rally as “mentally tiring and intensely stressful”, so why do it? The people he met, the warm welcomes he received and the breathtaking finish at the Harbour Bridge are experiences that make it all more than worthwhile, and form memories to treasure for many years to come.
