• QR codes help

    Posted by Mike Grant on February 15, 2012 at 9:16 pm

    I have a job to do that includes a QR code "pattern" I had a copy given to me but it was of a low resolution. 🙄 I tried countless times to trace it in Corel but could only get a rough finish. I ended up drawing it from scratch which took a fair bit of time that I hadn’t accounted for. So my question is this, how are these bar codes made and what is the easiest way of reproducing these as a vector and is there a limitation on the reproduced size of the finished code.

    Hi Mike,

    I used http://qrcode.kaywa.com/ on a recent job (on the laser engraver) It’ll download as a png graphic but they trace beautifully in corel.

    I think I got these down to about 15mm square on the tags – don’t think theres a maximum size, as long as the lens on the reading device can fit it in.

    Just found this one which negates the tracing step;

    It will let you download the finished code as pdf, eps and others

    I don`t know if this is true. but today I heard that they can be used to make your phone dial a high rate number (scam)

    They can be made to direct you to anything really, normally websites etc.

    One thing to consider when creating these QR codes is to track if they are actually being used, otherwise it could be a waste of time and until all mobile devices have an automatic QR scanner in them, people have to download a QR scanner to even read them!

    With this in mind, one everyone could probably use, Google Analytics! Use the below link to create a link, set it up as a QR monitor relating to your campaign/advertising and monitor to see how much its used. Once you have the link, use a QR generator to get your QR code, and you can monitor its use!

    Then use the link in something like the one Andy posted: http://qrcode.littleidiot.be/

    I have done a few QR codes. Many of them are created as png or jpg images.

    I have just proportionately expanded them in Flexi or Illustrator from the png or jpg. As they are perfectly square (black & white), they expand with no pixilation.

    The largest one I have printed has been an 8ft x 8ft one. It was enlarged from a jpg file supplied by the customer.
