  • Putting reflective vinyl over 3M carbon fibre vinyl

Posted by Simon Worrall on April 9, 2017 at 10:31 pm

    Hi
Has anybody ever put cut reflective vinyl over carbon fibre wrap vinyl?
It has a pronounced texture, so I was thinking it might be an issue getting it to stay down long term.
    Thanks in advance.

    Simon.

the last picture in this link shows the mid section of a van with a black graphic on it. thats done in carbon fibre a couple of years ago now. it was then wrapped over with chrome red wrapping film. zero problems!

just make sure you go over it firm with a felt edge squeegee and with heat at same time to promote adhesion.
reflective have normally a sort of aggressive adhesion anyway, so this will help.

hoiwever, are you talking "engineering grade" reflective or "conspicuous grade" which is much thicker?
if the later ide say no. as it will bridge the carbon and create a cavity for water etc to contaminate.

Thats what I thought Rob. Thanks for that.
Might have to put the reflective down first and register cut carbon fibre over the top of that…tricky to do, but possible I spose. Or suggest non-reflective.

No its engineering grade, but it has no flexibility to go into the voids.
I just tried it on a sample piece. Seems to stick quite well, but I wouldnt trust it long term.

And when you peel it off you get a pronounced pattern in the adhesive, which shows it is bridging the gaps.

if EVEN as it passes the 3D texture of the carbon, its bridging, then ide not trust it as such.
Odd though, ide have thought it would conform well. I know Oracals engineering does but thats not saying it would at the edge of the letters. i just mean the 3d texture part.
