  • Problems with Dibond tray…

Posted by Bart Van Wassenhove on July 18, 2005 at 10:08 am

    Hi there,
this weekend we tried to install a dibond tray to a wall. We first made a frame of alu profiles and mounted it on the wall. Then we covered the frame with the tray and attached this with selfdrilling screws on the side of the tray. Problem was that these sides were not really straight and became a bit “wavy”.
Can anyone please tell me what’s the correct way of mounting these trays? Do you use selfdrilling screws? Because they easilly tear trough the sheet…
I hope my explanation was ok (with my poor english…) :lol1:

i think my main problem is that the returns of the tray are not bended properly in a corner of 90°. They always have the intention to return to their original corner…
How can we bend these straight? 😕

    hi there
all i do when making trays is to bend passed 90° and it will stay at 90° with just a little bend back after all 4 corners have been bonded the tray will stay in shape
when you install on site we fix 4×2 at top and bottom and sides if these are installed to same size as internals of sign tray then all should be fine if not the 90° bends will either get smaller or larger .
if for an example you make the frame smaller then the sides of the tray will pull in to meet the timber frame
When fixing we screw all 4 sides ,pilot hole and countersink and touch in screw head with colour to match sheet
If you cant get to top or sides i use grip fill and bond to timber frame work

You have to route right down to the front laminate for it to bend cleanly if you leave any black core behind it will pinch into the bend causing it to push back.

I don’t use Diabond, to expensive, I get a local engineers to bend up the tray in Alu and then cover it in Vinyl.

I make a steel frame and drill and tap M8 into it, then fit the frame to the wall using expanding bolts, stud and 3 nuts. 1 nut to expand the sleeve and the other 2 are used to adjust the frame so it’s flat.
Bit long winded to explain but all the walls around here are stone and no flat brick walls.

Maybe your getting better prices than I’ve been quoted but it was stupidly expensive for diabond.

Who do you get it from?
