  • Problems printing onto 3M material

Posted by John Dorling on July 21, 2010 at 1:55 pm

    Hi All

I have changed over from Orafol to 3M printing films, mainly because of the better service I get from Wm Smith. I use IJ-40 and IJ-380, printed on a VP-540 versacamm. Where I used to get perfect results on Oracal 3951 and 3551, no matter what I do I just seem to get bad print results on the 3M stuff. I am using the correct 3M profiles, but these put down waaaaaaaaay too much ink and change the colours beyond all recognition. The volume of ink means that I can’t use the take up reel as it takes so long to dry. The effect I get when using any of the other profiles, which work fine on just about any other print vinyl, is that of the ink sitting on the surface and not penetrating the media. It lacks colour depth and has that ‘orange peel’ effect. Has anyone else had this problem and know a way round it as it’s beginning to drive me mad!!!

    Many thanks

    John

big fan of ij40 don’t knock it.
use you old profile as sounds like the 3m one is a dud.

I found that the 3M profile for our JV33 was hopeless too. I use the Arlon one from
the William Smith link, and this is much better. Maybe see if there is a Roland version.

Chris I swear by the Scotchcal 50 pigmented vinyls, I haven’t yet found a profile that works for their print media and I’ve tried all the VersaWorks standard and RIPC ones that work fine on my other similar spec print media. I get the same results with IJ380. Just wondering if it’s a known issue but it seems not. What type of machine do you use? I wonder if it’s a Versacamm/Versaworks thing?

i would use these profiles i would expect the same result.

also allprint supplies do a range of profiles my favorite is LD3810G 720 dpi
on a soljet pro2 with ecosolmax inks.

I cant get a good print on ij40 or 380 on our jv33. We also find it lays down too much ink and you end up with the rollers leaving marks and it doesn’t dry quick enough. I was trying to match some solid colours on 380 yesterday but it was a waste of time. Shame given it is a superb vinyl otherwise.

If you use Onyx, download the Arlon profiles from the link via William Smith site, and
use these instead. We find that they work very well, with good ink limits and colour
matching. Like you, I have found the 3M profiles not very good, but in our experience,
they don’t lay enough ink down, and look wishy washy.

OK I’m a bit embarrassed now! I have just tried using the correct 3M profile but printing at HIGH QUALITY which I never usually do as with other profiles it uses more ink and takes longer but with the IJ40 it seems the other way round. Not printed much and its low coverage anyway but the results so far are as good if not better than any other material I have used.

Also had a call from Gill at Wm Smith who saw the post and rang up to help out – that’s service!

Just feel a bit of a prune for not trying this first! 😳

Fair play to you for being Honest…at least if we come up against the same problem we’ll know where to start (and sounds like good service from Wm Smith) 😎

Hi Chris ….. would you have a copy of that profile that would work on our Grenadier ??

I’m just using the Versaworks profiles on the 40 series, good results.

    SP540V and Max inks

    I love the IJ40 and IJ380.

I use the Oracal profiles (3551) and the 3M prints perfectly.

Glad you got it sorted tho mate.

Gill is a true professional too.
