Problems importing eps file into signlab
Posted by Colin Aburrow on January 9, 2007 at 12:16 pmHi all
I know this is going to sound like a really stupid question to all you sign makers. I have received an eps file from a new client for some vinyl cut banners. I can import file into signlab7 but can’t seem to select text or plot. I don’t get a lot of vinyl cutting work and what I do get is basic text created by myself in signlab. Please can anyone help as do not want to ring client to say I have a problem with their artwork if its me doing something wrong.
Thanks
Colin

Is it a vector? try un-grouping it all to, or you could post the file and someone can have a look for you

Hi Nick
I am going to sound even more stupid now but how do I upload file.
Thanks

You’ll have to post in the file sharing forum. I think I’m right in saying its the only place where you can upload a file. If you reference this thread then people will know what its about.

I’m not sure why you’re having an issue. I brought it into SignLab in the following manner (probably similar to what you were doing):
- Drag-and-dropped the EPS onto SignLab workspace.
- When asked, I chose to use the PDF import filter for greater reliability.
- On the PDF Import Options dialog, I removed tick from the Import text as graphics option.
- For a cutting job, I wouldn’t worry about the Show map named colours option, as you’re mainly concerned with this for digital printing.
The file loaded okay as a collection of paths. Nothing was grouped, and I was able to select the individual letter paths without issue.
It is not clear to me why you were having issue (unable to select text, unable to plot). Perhaps the file was inadvertently converted to a bitmap? Or perhaps it was grouped in some fashion? Regardless, it looks like Nick saved the day…

I sometimes have issues with eps files too. I open them in either Corel or Adobe, save as an ai file then it imports into signlab no problem!

I tried to import the file into SL today and unless I use the PDF not EPS it just kills SL and stops responding with is pain!

Hi Nick,
Let me get clarification on that. When importing an EPS file, the PDF option works okay for you, but you find that SignLab hangs when using the EPS option.
Correct?

Yes Rod, that’s it, some are ok but the file that posted here just hangs

Thanks Nick. I appreciate your comments. I believe the older EPS option is available to provide support for unusual files received from customers. I would recommend using the PDF option.
Marcella, understood. There can be quite a bit of variation with respect to how a given application will export its EPS files, so requesting customer files in either AI or PDF format is recommended. On a related note, AI files later than Illustrator 8 are essentially a PDF file with an AI extension. I mention this as FYI, and recommend that you use what is most comfortable.

Rod, funny you should mention that, I always save them as an illustrator legacy file, version 8 or lower to import them into signlab 😀
