problem opening coreldraw X5 file
Posted by John Hughes on May 28, 2010 at 11:52 amHi. I’ve been working on a job recently – And the file size is a tad over 600mb (the sign is 50 metres long with loads of pics).
Anyway, I printed most of it yesterday but went to open the file today but it wont open – tried the backup file but no joy either 🙁
Any ideas what’s going on and how to open ?
cheers

First try F8 restart of Draw.
If that fails try making a copy of the cdr file.
Rename it with a .zip extension
Open Zip file with Winzip or similar, you will see
FOLDERS, ONE WILL BE CONTENT
Open this and there will be a cdr called rif data.
Try opening that.

Hi Alan – tried F8 restart but no joy. Renamed as .ZIP but the riffData.cdr file wont open either. It says the file size is 0 but if I right click the original CDR file – the file size is 656mb
Any other ideas ?
thanks

i think its corrupt… maybe run chkdsk on your drive to fix it
X5 is a problem for large format print at the moment, for saving and for viewing files on the screen.

Cheers Dave – i’ll try that tmrw. I also put the file on a stick and tried on my laptop but same result.
Do you think system restore might work?
thanks

if ur able to move and manipulate the file then i suspect its trashed
i do wonder if you forced corel to restart or something, that saving method is terrible…. my designers are between X3 and X5 at the moment, using X3 more as X5 needs a lot more testing/tuning
-
Dave, you’re right – I’ve giving up on it !
Lucky I didn’t delete the EPS files which were sent to the rip so imported back in to corel so managed to save some of the job.
And your also right about X5 – noticed on Corel community that others are having problems as well.
Thanks for your help both.

ah well i was going to suggest a re-import but i was presuming your outputting in sections…
if you do have the full item then import it into photoshop to raster it, might work well

The sign is about 40 pieces of hoarding board. Although the design goes across the full lenght, I sent it in sections to the rip but didn’t send all of them so just got to redraw / match the ‘missing’ ones.
I usually send the whole job as you suggested but made the decision to do in parts cus over 50 metres

Hi Glen – yes there was but that was corrupted as well

Aye…sorry John, I’ve just re-read your first post
When I’m doing large scale drawings I sometimes work at 10% scale just to keep the drawing manageable……….I think anything over 40,000 mil page size and Corel struggles a bit.
Obviously of no use to you now but it’s worked for me in the past

Was working at 25% – lot of pics & tad worried bout resizing too much in the rip.
But hey ho it’s only a sign – off to the pub now to talk Politics, Religion, Women etc etc (any thing but work ) thinking bout it…..nor politics

FWIW, Corel always wants to review files that become corrupt…if something happens with the hard disk there is little that can be done, but if something when wrong while saving the file there is a chance we can fix the file and stop it from happening to it in the future.
Please contact me should this ever happen.

Hi Tony – thanks for reply.
With reference to this file / job – On Saturday I imported the EPS files from the RIP in to a new file and gave it a new name.
I then re drew the sections I lost, printed the job. The file was saved before closing down. On Tuesday morning I went to re open the file and….. same again…. corrupted.
How can I send to you to re instate?Although X5 has some really good points, I’m sorry to say we gone back to X3,
for now at least.Thanks

JohnDo you have an account on yousendit.com? If so, upload it there and I’ll grab the .cdr file from there.
If not, do you have an FTP site I can download it from?
If not, can you send me a DVD?You mentioned that you’ve got back to X3….can you tell me what’s forced that decision for you?

Yes we have FTP – I’ll PM you tomorrow with details and thanks for that 🙂
Re X5 – apart from the current problem – which wasn’t a major issue..
1) saving files to PDF (which we send out as proofs) – takes forever and creates huge files and sometimes ‘root’ problems. For every job we now c to c, copy and paste in X3 and save to PDF —- pain in the A@@.
2) Saving files takes much longer
3) Freezes on occasions
4) Crashes on occasions
5) Colour management – I really need to understand that side more 🙂We get these issues on 2x PC’s
Don’t get me wrong I’m a big fan of CDR but see from other forums that I’m not the only one experience problems.
thanks

John:
Sorry you’re having issues and I’d like to try and help. For the aid of others, can I ask you to start a new thread on the issues you’re experiencing and we’ll tackle them one by one?
We could handle them here, but the thread is going to turn into a logistical nightmare.
