  • PrintingCMYK grey – without a redish tinge. advice please?

Posted by Praveen Jayawardene on November 18, 2011 at 12:37 pm

    Hello Guys,

    Hope all is well.

Can anyone share their experience with printing CMYK GREY.I’m sure this would have come up many times.

All my grey keeps coming up with a redish/brownish tinge .How can i reduce this to be more grey tone? Grey has always been a struggle.

    MIMAKI JV3 130L ,PHOTOPRINT

    Appreciate any help.

    Cheers,
    PJ

grey is the most difficult colour print on any printer

You have to have everything perfect, the right profile, the right transfer, the right colour management settings, bitmap/vector/cmyk/gray/rgb all come into it, head alignments is another.

Lots of practice and you might solve it… hard to give a guide really but I would just trying combinations

That’s very true Dave. But depending on what RIP you’re using, you could also cheat and try setting the output CMYK to none. This is often a good get around but you may find the colour balance goes out slightly.

Can I ask what type of ink you using OEM or have you changed to third party? Some 3rd party inks need colour re profiling. This could be a simple adjustment thro a spectrometer thingy. I swapped my inks over to Inktec and the magenta was much stronger. did a reprofile and worked a treat

    Hello GORDON,

    Thanks for the reply.

As per usual the suppliers say this is common on all printers.I thought it was just an excuse because they couldnt supply me with a proper colour profile. In the end i had a Hexis distributor write me a profile to suit my printer and using their digital vinyl i definately had improved grey scale. Not perfect but alot better than what i had..

My model is jv3 130sl. Is yours the same model ?

the only way of getting true grey is for the media to be profiled on your own machine.. everything has to be right.

using supplied profiles helps get it near, but you got to be printing the same way that machine was profiled… same ink, same head height, same this, same that. lol
