• Printing onto tiles

Posted by Paul Rollason on November 9, 2004 at 10:13 am

    Hi all

I’ve been asked for a quote to print onto a number of ceramic tiles.

They will be in full colour and every one will be different.

I think the best route to go down maybe sublimation, I do have a heat press but no sublimation printer.

What I need to know is how much I could expect to charge per tile so I can work out if it is worth me buying a small sub printer or getting someone else to do the printing for me.

I think he needs around 100 tiles

I hope all that made sense

We have a printer that prints directly on tiles , exceptional colour colour , glossyness etc cqlled a Busjet , it goes for over Eu 12000.
If you want to sublimate , you need a heat press and an airbrush and you need to coat the tiles with a polyester based 2 part resin to do so. The tiles CANNOT be used for floor tiles as the finish is not that durable and you need to make sure they arent gonna get a huge amount of UV either.
Depending on size , you can get either an Epson 1290 (super A3) or an epson 890 (a4) with sublimation inks to do so.
for 100 tiles , it will nOT be worth the capital investment unless you want to do more sublimatable stuff.
We charge GBP 10-15 for a 30cm x 30cm tile depending on qty

It would all be down to the size and finsih of the tiles. You also need to take into account the cost of each transfer. If you haven’t got one already you will also need a silicone mat (this helps with the contours on the tile) to press them.

Don’t forget you could also use the printer to increase your range of products, i.e. mouse mats, keyrings etc. this would help in the long run to offset the initial costs.
