  • Printing number plates via corel draw…..

I`m about to received a small termal printer for number plates.

Just type in the info, press go, and it prints onto the reflective… Jobs a good`n.

Its using a special program at the moment, but I`ve been told I can run it from corel (i wonder if it`ll run from signlab too!)

    My question about corel is,

Can I get it to print halftones, and if so, how.

What I`m thinking of doing is to print the model of the vehicle in the back ground (eg. ford) in half tones and at the same time print the cars reg in solid black.

You can buy the backings already printed like this, but if it can be done this way, I`ll save on stock etc.

please bear in mind the machine only prints black, via a print ribon.

    your thoughts – please.

    thanks Kev

If its anything like the PC60, you should be able to switch the colour to 40% black and it will print a halftone background image without a problem, I do it all the time. Only difference being, I print onto clear, and print the number plate letters at the same time. It still has to do it in 2 passes, as the halftone is different to the black, but its certainly a quick way to get a set of show plates together. 😀

In corel the cmyk pallette has % of black as do other pallettes, if you hover the pointer over the colour it should show its name or click on the pallette and select show colours, dont know if this will work with you printer though

“It still has to do it in 2 passes, as the halftone is different to the black,”

Dewi, don`t quite get what you mean. “doing it in 2 passes”

I`m hoping to be able to print the number plate registration and the halftone background image all in 1 print action…

If you are using the roland there is a box in the print setup menu that lets you print as “GREYSCALE” this will print your half tones and solid black in one pass.

Ah cool! 😀 Nice one Mike 😀

Becky, the reason I need to go across in 2 passes is because I’ve been doing it wrong 😕 I’ve been setting the print as spot colour black, so its been printing the halftone first, then going back to print the solid black. Using Mike’s method solves the problem on the PC60, but I should imagine with your printer being a single colour machine, it will default as a greyscale anyway, so you shouldn’t be hindered with this option.

The top 6 or 7 colours in the default Corel pallette should be all you need to work with. Humble opinion, but once the machine arrives, I would experiment with the percentages until you’re happy with the results. You may waste a tenners worth of reflectives, but at least you would discover the best percentage for your particular machine and should enjoy cool background images from there on in. 😀

    thanks guys for the info.

Got the little bugg3r printing solids and halftones in 1 pass.

The half tones look alittle jaggery. Changing the % of black on changes the colour not the quality of the half tones.

Any idea how to make the look better.
