  • Printing greys on a Roland BN-20, advice please?

    Hi

I asked this question a couple of years ago when I first purchased my BN-20 but I am still having issues printing greys and it is driving me mad. They always seem to come out colour cast – either with a browny red, purple or green tinge. I have tried on numerous times adjusting the settings – density control etc.. but just can’t seem to get a nice lite, mid or dark grey. I even went up to Roland Academy for the day on one of their introduction to the BN-20 days and as we were the only ones there I was lucky enough to pick Joe’s brain on how to achieve a nice grey but unfortunately the colours on their BN-20 were also colour cast and we ran out of time to do any more testing

I have managed to get a couple of nice mid greys using a specific CMYK breakdown (30 24 24 0 – prints a nice mid grey for example) but was wondering whether any BN-20 users have cracked this and would be willing to share.

    Many thanks in adavnce

Have you tried the Roland Colour System library? It works with an illustrator plug in, I am not sure if they make it for other design programs. It is designed to replicate specific colours that are brighter and truer than you can otherwise get. There are 22 graded blacks in there with no colour cast at all.

    Here is a link.

    Hi Simon

Thanks for your reply and link. Yes I do have the Roland Colour System library plug in and did print it out in full but I was getting colour cast on that as well (a brown tinge) so I presume something must be incorrect in my settings?

I have followed the instructions in the link you sent and have printed a swatch of the 22 graded blacks but these are also coming out ‘browny’ when printed onto clear media. It does’t show up very well in the attached picture. I have also attached a pic of the setting I am using. Any other suggestions please??

    Thanks.

I hate greys. Have the same issue on our JV33. The colour can have a cast to it and even printing one drop to the next the colour can be different.

Thank you Kev. I am sure it is something along those lines. I just need to work out which specific settings to use as I am sure I have tested most of those over the years I have tried to get the problem sorted. Thanks for your time.
