• Printer/Cutter Wanted

Posted by Mike Fear on June 4, 2004 at 9:40 am

Hi, I’m after getting a printer/cutter all in one job – something like a PC60, PNC model will be fine – doesnt need to do wide jobs as pretty much all my stuff is small detail work.

And, to quote the film ‘Snatch’ – “I don’t want my pants pulling down over the price” 😕

If anyone has an old machine laying around after an upgrade etc… let me know.

    Thanks
    Mike

    Hi,
I have a Roland PC 12 print and cut machine. It is under six months old and I have only put around 20 meters through it. It goes together with refill ribbons (6reds 6 blues 6 yellows 8 black).
I am looking for £1.600 OVNO.
The machine is In Gibraltar, so transport is something which would have to be arranged.
Reason for selling is that I am upgrading to the Versacamm.
    Regards
    Clive

Thanks for the offer but its probably more than I need at the moment, something cheaper like the 600 is more within my budget.

You are gonna be VERY VERY lucky to get a PC-60 for £600!

Are you dipping a toe in Mike or going for the likes of vehicles etc etc?

Only reason I ask is the PC-60 I’ve found to be a great starting point. As Nik says, around a grand to about 1500 is about right and its a good introduction to the print side of the business. Only draw back is, although you can do vehicle stuff and alot more with it, its not the ideal machine for the job, mainly due to the cost of the print. Its more suited to short run labels and one offs, things like that.

If you’re going for it in a big way, it may be worth considering a loan for something like the Cadet. I say the Cadet, simply because its the popular choice at the moment, not because I have any experience with it. Other alternatives include the Gerber Edge 2, which I’ve heard mixed reports about, some good, some definately not so good 🙁 and the other is a printer I keep hearing about called the Soljet (<that how its spelt or?)

Picking the right machine that suits the jobs you want and your budget is a bit of a bugger. Personally I dove in the deep end, swam a little to the shallow end and bought a PC-60. It does exactly what I wanted, and it seems to be merryily earning its money, but whats right for me, might not be right for everyone else 😕 Damn, I’m as much use as a chocolate fireguard, I’ll shut up now! 🙄 🙄

    Cheers, Dewi

Don’t think i misread too much, but a PC-600 is gonna cost you even more than a PC-60!

And I would imagine more than £1600?

A PC60 ( or even PC50 ) would probably be fine – I can buy a brand new PC12 for just over £2000, so £1600 for a used one is bit high for me. Around a grand is OK, but if I’m buying used I dont really want to go much more than that as you never know how much use it has had or if there have been problems with it.

Dewi – most of what I do is either one off, prototype short runs or specialist orders for people, I have so much work doing that at present that I’m not even looking at doing vehicle signs and vans etc ( plus the profit margins are much better on small things if you can get enough work in 😆 )… the CAMM1 I bought was mainly as it allowed me to do graphics in more finishes like chrome, carbon etc… ( I mostly do waterslide stuff at the moment, but the vinyl side is expanding for different things ).

So, really I dont want to invest too much as it’ll take too long to pay for itself. I agree that if you are doing full print vehicle stuff it probably is worth getting one of the larger more expensive machines as it will pay for itself pretty quickly, but I’d rather start with something small that does the job and then get something bigger if the need is there.

There is a PC600 on ebay for £1100, but I’ve got a pretty strong suspicion it doesnt work looking at the listing !

    Just seen a PC-60 with Signlab 5.0 currently @ £850, not met it’s reserve yet though 😥

Yeah, I saw that one as well, the seller wants over £2000 for it, if you see his listing he reckons one sold for £3500 s/h a while ago ( must have been an eccentric millionaire bought it ! ) – I know it has got a load of ribbons with it and the software ( not much use as I have flexisign already though 😕 ) and I think he’s upped the price because of this.

As Nik said, she paid £1K for hers, which is more realistic – as a general rule any kind of used electronic equipment is going to be worth about half what it cost new if it is something recent, or about a third if it is something older that has been superceeded.

Ah right didn’t see the £2k bit 🙁

Strange how the guy selling the other one only has photos of the back (!)

I emailed the seller and he told me he wouldnt sell for less than 2 – I’ve been doing stuff on Ebay for about 5 years now and learned a few things and how to spot some dodgy stuff.

The other ons rings bells because the seller makes such a big thing that its a sold as seen, no return sale – plus he doesnt have any ribbons so conveniently cant test it !

Theres a lot of stuff like this on there, mostly electrical goods – I’ve seen stuff like printers where the seller has said he cant test if as he doesnt have a power cable !!! – they’ll have 20 other printers listed all with the same deal – cant tell me a guy who sells printers as a business doesnt own one kettle lead to see if they power up 😕
