Printed window graphics with privacy
Hi all.
So, this is a topic I’ve tried to successfully answer for myself several times in the past, but never carried the thought process through to completion. There is possibly a very simple solution, but if there is, I haven’t thought of it myself.
Anyway, in the past I have done quite a few window applications using perforated window vinyl. Before I ever try and sell this type of installation to a customer, I ALWAYS emphasise the ‘net curtain’ effect this type of installation results in so that they are never surprised by the end result.
Just in case some people are unsure what I term as the ‘net curtain’ effect, it’s when it goes darker outside than inside and people can suddenly see in through the print almost as if it isn’t there.Using ultra-clear laminate, the results have always been good and every customer has been pleased. But I do get asked if it is possible to have the same printed window image effect, but with the security of not actually being able to see in from outside, but still being able to see out from the inside.
And this is where I always hit a brick wall.
I’ve thought about privacy films (like the silver one-way vision type film), but assume that they also have to be fitted on the outside of the glass, the same as the ‘windowperf’ vinyl?
Then I have thought about tinted film on the inside, but am not sure how well it would work. I assume if it was too dark, you wouldn’t be able to see out as well as you would like. And if it was too light, you would still be able to see inside.I am hoping that somebody either knows of a product that works alongside the perforated window vinyl, or has devised some super clever method of achieving this result.

The only part i can answer is referring to the one way vision. Silver/mirrored tint. This can also be applied internally as long as the glass does not have gas inbetween the glass. HOWEVER it works off the basis of light so has the same "curtain effect" issues.
Interesting questions tho as i often get asked the same, privacy, heat repellent, lets light through and can see out. -
silver reflective can be used inside as long as the units are not laminated. If laminated use outside silver tint as a rule.
I try to tell clients that this is the same film used in police interviews so they get an understanding, darker in the viewing room than the interview room. If the don’t want people seeing in the will have to use a 70% and 30% light source. At night only way achievable will be fitting lights to the outside to give the percentage, best just to use blinds at dusk.
