  • Printed Window Graphics on the inside

Well i promised my first post would be a question and here it is.

I am getting very troubled and confused over this. I have a customer that wants his printed graphics to be on the inside of the window. I don’t print so i get my prints from another sign shop.

This sign shop tells me i really should have the graphics on the outside of the window, so i tell the customer this and no, he still wants them on the inside.

So i go back to the sign shop guy and tell him this. Now he tells me, well the best thing to do is to to put the print on a white static cling vinyl on the inside of the window.

So off i go to the customer and tell him this. but no. He does not want that stuff! "I WANT IT SUCK" he says.

So after doing research on this forum i find the print should be reverse printed on clear laminate and laminated with white vinyl.

So off to the sign shop again and tell them this. Great i got it sorted i think. But no, later the sign shop guy comes back and tells me what i should do is get it printed in revers on on clear, i should then apply that to the window, then apply the white vinyl myself otherwise the white vinyl will stretch when i am squeegeeing it down if the white is pre-laminated onto the clear

Now i am lost please, what is the best (easy) way to put printed window graphicss on the inside ?

Its a young guy that runs this sign shop and he says he has been doing this for ten or more years, I don’t remember how long exactly. He tells me he has always put graphics on the outside and that is what he tells his customers. He has two Roland 540’s and he does do some good prints for me. I cant believe that he has never come across this method before.

Is there some difficulty in laminating the white onto the clear ? Im beginning to think there is some reason he does not want to do it that way ? but i cant think what it would be.

You say find another printer, yes, i have tried. One person tried to rip me off with a dodgy copy of Impact Outlines (now sorted thanks Brian) the others prices are WAY too high for me at £35 a sq meter. Price for print is another question i have, but i think i should save that for another thread.

Im happy there are places like this(uksingboards) where you can just trow out a question and get some good advice.

I always do window graphics on the inside of glass (Avoids problems with vandals etc)
Potentially applying to the inside has its own issues (window tints now being popular can make the image seem dull/faded as well as giving more headaches when applying; well other considerations at least) 😉

I’d go with reverse print onto clear and then back up with white (If they’re close to you I’d do this the next day to give the first layer time to settle down)

Your customer is quite clear about not being applied to the outside – I’d also try to find out why for future reference; then if you get the same sort of work you already know what to say if the customer says the same thing) 😀

Keep faith, you’ll get there in the end

I used to operate a Fuji Acuity flatbed digital printer with a white option and printed window vinyls all the time. I would print in reverse and then print a selective white or flood white back up, even double sided with and opaque layer so they can be read from inside and outside. But I would advise to reverse print and apply on the inside. This will stop bored kids from peeling it off the window. I no longer work for the company with the acuity but would recommend that process. The company I work for now reverse prints onto clear vinyl and backs up rather by screen or white vinyl. The white vinyl should be applied before application to the window.

    I hope I have helped.

I too buy my print in, and have had no problems with the technique mentioned several times above. Dry application to the glass, and I cant see how you could possibly stretch the vinyl unless totally ham fisted.

If your printer cant (or dosen’t want) do it that way, find someone else who can…..

when using digital media the products should always match to avoid problems. If using printable white and matching laminate there is no difference between printing on white and applying clear laminate or printing on clear and laminating with white. I really cannot see the guys problem.

    As mentioned above change supplier

    as Chris sais

my guess is the chap you sub too has only one laminator (like me) so changing to white and back to clear can be a pain but I just laminate reverse prints to clear with white using wet app on the workbench – takes a day to dry but no problem.

John, i think you could be right there. I was at his shop and he was saying he had a lot of trouble with the laminator when he first got it. So could well be that its now setup they way he wants it.

Anyway now, he will do reverse print and laminate with white for me. But i just dropped the customer. Twice now the customer promised a deposit payment on named date and twice now he never came through. He wanted it as a rush job and i worked trough the weekend for him. Now if he wants the job done he will be paying up front before i do any work for him and my prices just went up to 😀
