This type of A-board is popular in our area as it doesn’t blow over in the high winds, so if you get a breezy corner where the customer wants to put a pavement sign then think about this option. It may slide a little but it doesn’t go down.
The foam is 18mm and slots into the steel fabricated base, it’s held with two screws enabling the customer to change promos now and then. Good for their business and ours.

great idea billy & nice sign too mate 😉 is this done using your versa camm?
do you fabricate the frame in-house or buy it in?

This was printed on my Versacamm Rob, the customer was very impressed with this one. His fascia sign “The Mint” was stainless steel letters with a green neon around the edge, l replicated this using Corels blend tool if you look closely.
I buy the frame in for about £30 from two lads on the industrial estate.
These signs are good for cutting shapes as long as you mirror the image on the reverse. This “ICES” one was done with vinyls.

both look great mate and very effective. best part about them is the shapes. makes all the difference.. obviosly with the foamboard its easily jigsawed to create these shapes coming right out the top of the sign blank..

i think the versa camm will be a great tool for things like this. i dont see any joins, is it in one peice?
i dont think lamination would be needed for this type of sign, but as rodney gold has mentioned it maybe an extra selling point to sell it with a “tough gaurd protection” (laminated) stops the kids scribbling on it & it is easy wiped. sold at extra cost to the customer but gives him the option & if it does happen you have no come backs.
I actualy did this with my glasses. the women asked would i like to pay extra £20 or so to have the protection and i said yes right away! 😀

we use a foamex thats almost 1 inch thick. both sides are gloss faced and it is very ridged. i would imagine this could be adapted so you would only use one peice of the foam and letter boath sides of it. maybe cheaper to construct too?

Smart idea and cool designs Billy 😀 How much do you sell this type of A board for?

And shouldn’t it be called an Upside Down T board? 😉 😉

    Cheers, Dewi

It’s in one piece, the size of foam is 608 x 1010, this way l get 6 pieces from a 1220 x 3050 sheet. I prefer to laminate the print for my own piece of mind as well as the customers.
These boards vary in price, start at £130 for basic stuff and can be as much as £175.

Had a play with some 9mm foamboard, chopping it with a jigsaw first, then with a safety knife and finally (act of madness on my part) I attacked it with a hacksaw. I found it to be quite easy to work with, which shocked me a little bit as I was expecting to wreck the foamboard with my hacking and chopping.

I’ll give this method of A board a try Billy, although with my lack of digital capabilities, I’ll need to do my designs in cut vinyl or paint. Knowing what to charge is fantastic, as I’ve noticed every time I think of a price, I’m undercharging when I find out what others charge. I thought initially this type of board would be sold around the 90 pounds mark, which would have lost me £40!

Will you be going to Sign UK Billy?

    Cheers, Dewi

I’m going to try to get to Sign UK if l can.
The thing is with this type of Abrd, frame costs me £30. Hammerite paint spray is £5- £10. 18mm Foambrd £22ish and then the design and time to jigsaw the shape. Lamination? It all adds up.

Have you ever tried to make your own frame/stand.

I`ve got a mig welder from sip, cost about £200. Very easy to use. I buy lengths of box section/flat/angle and make all my own brackets etc.

From memory the last time I bought 1″ box section it was about £10 ish for 6 metres.

If you`re buy alot of stands, it might pay to make your own, especially as you`ve got to spray them yourself.

The welder helps you with all your other brackets. The best part is you keep every thing in house.

Come in handy at M-O-T time too. 😆 😆

Your post brought something to mind that was pointed out to me a few weeks ago at a school reunion. I was crap at metalwork, woodwork, physics, chemistry and scraped through ‘O’ level art.

Quite what qualifications I have to make signs I don’t know!!

I have renovated several houses and done my own bit of ‘Grand Design’ knocking 4 rooms off and adding seven at my current mansion! 😎

Education is one thing Martin, experience is quite another. I was poo at all things practical when at school. A couple of years of work and I had good basic skills in metal, wood, plastic and design…..etc

One thing that has always struck me about signmakers ( I guess it must apply to other trades too) is the wide range of skills that people have. I know we all have our strengths and weaknesses but I know people who weld metal, create fantastic woodworking projects and draw like michelalngel…..michaelangelllo…….Da Vinci amongst other things.
