  • Printable cotton (not canvas) – is there such a thing?

    Hi everyone

Apologies for not being around for a while, work and health issues keep colliding!

As I am getting on so well with my UV Lightbar and printer I am getting many more ‘strange and unusual’ enquiries, the latest being if I can print to cotton, ready to be cut and stitched -into cushion covers!

Now I have been printing onto digital garment vinyl with the Lightbar with no problems, the ink stays fast after washing and tumble-drying (I have sampled it).
I’ve also printed up flags and canvas, so now thinking ‘why not’ cotton or linen material, but have no idea if anything is out there suitable!

If any of you have any knowledge, or bright ideas, please let me know?

We’ve just printed on some linen for a client, which will be used for embroidery panels.
We found that we had to put application tape on the back, so that it didn’t ruck up on
the edges, but it printed fine. We put it through the laminator to apply the tape, and
then trimmed the edges to give a good edge, and wound it onto a core. You will
probably need to run it with the head in the high position, and keep an eye on it as it
runs through, to make sure that you don’t have a head strike. It’s OK to run on the
    take-up.

Allprint supply a range of fabrics, unsure if they do a cotton based material but worth checking.

Hi Colin, thanks, have now got samples coming from All Print.
Jamie, what app tape did you use, paper or clear?
The customer is gong to source a length of material for me to try.

    Hi,
True Cotton has to be printed with Reactive Inks and then Steamed, there are many Polyester Based Textiles that are Cotton Like and can be used for Cushions & other home textile applications.

Hi Jamie, I tried backing with app tape, was a disaster!

Stewart, do you have any sources please? I now have another customer looking at exactly the same thing!

    Thanks for your help.

    Lorraine.
