    I’d start at $1200.
    I’d use cast.

    HI MO,

i’ve worked that out as about 12m (@610) of dark green and maybe 2-3m of the lighter green,

the cheapest film I use for flat panels -if the customer wants cheaper film- is oracle 651. i retail that for £15 per linear meter -sometimes more- which includes cut/weed/tape.

that makes it £225 for materials,

labour, assuming they’ll not bother to wash and clean it properly, maybe a 1.5hr to clean and prep (if fairly good already), maybe 3hrs to have a comfortable fitting window. £25ph, £112.50

total of £337.50 if they bring to me.

that said, looking at what others are charging, and seeing as i’ve not properly raised my prices (with any structure) in the past 3yrs, I’ve been realising that i perhaps need to review my pricing structures, however, i’ve been turned down for jobs 3 times in the past 7 days because I was way too expensive, go figure!

at the end of the day, I know what is worth my time once I price it, some jobs i’ll alter the price to the job as it’s an easy one with good profit, others take a lot longer to apply, weed etc. and will not be haggled over.

well I would certainly use no less than 5-7 year calendared and I think your price is a bit light given the wind deflector is not the easiest fit and I guess a roller shutter rear takes some time I would wnt to be nearer £400

    John 😀

Yeah cheers guys, it’s not actually a wind deflector it’s a luton so quite easy there. I think I’m probably right in the £325 mark… I will probably load another £50 for short notice

Probably about the same as your price:

    Materials 145.80+vat (based on metamark, MD7 1220mm)

Design time £50 +vat (accounting for slightly more than an hour, when you’ve phoned them, done proofs, and ordered materials etc)

    Installation about £80.00 +vat

    £275.80 + vat (£330.96)

As mentioned, probably should account for the roller shutter so put another 4-60 quid

I forgot it’d be a roller door, I hate them, poxy things. thats at least another hour faffing about trimming and making sure there’s nothing to lift up etc, I’ll go with your £400 i think.

OMG I just converted pounds to dollars!
You’d only charge $525 for that big truck?
I wouldn’t even do a regular work van for under $600.
    Just sayin’.

I guess it’s all relative Jill,

not too many years ago though, £400 was $800! I guess we charge what the market supports, wages between our countries are probably different etc.

i wouldn’t use anything fancy on this truck though, I really do think that cast is overkill and for the kind of money this job would attract, just less profit.

if it were more colours, block shadows etc then yes, a lot more, but based on 90% one colour and a bit of another, it’s all fairly simple, no changing rolls etc, simply cut in 2-3m chunks, weed and tape, that kinda job can be done as fast as the cutter can cut, I reckon maybe a couple of hours to do the lot, the artwork isn;t taxing, and my estimate of four hours usually includes time to chat with passers by about how many spelling mistakes they can see etc.!

well it was short notice, got the job for £385 it’s a days work for me total as I only like to one project at a time…. done a similar job last week so I know a day will be a nice easy one…. also allows me to have my part timer in to tape up and do the small orders for that day such as t shirts etc…..

    Nice

I think you really should be looking at between £450 – £550 + VAT for this.

You could always barter with the guy to see if he’d cater a party for you.
I’m sure for £325 you could get a small tent, a clown, and one balloon.
    Cake would be extra tho.

475.00 and using cast. Cast for everything, cannot see the point of keeping same colours with different lifespans.

Well, they are only keeping this vehicle for 3 more years so I’m using a 4-5 year from Metamark….. total cost of materials including app tape is £75. I did one of these lutons a couple of weeks back but with a full colour logo pretty much exactly the same but in black for a local charity. It took me about 4 hours to tape and apply…. so I think my price is reasonable. By the time my helper tapes it all up it will probably only take me a couple of hours to finish up.

The design took me about 30 mins to sort out, they supplied a great pdf of the logo which was already a vector image so nothing to do there. The stripes on the logos will need a full colour print becuase of pantone colours but to be honest, it’s not even a meters worth of material.

    Mo,
not sure which bit you are printing? and how close you will get to the pantone.
But I am with the £400ish Mark

Hi Pete, just the two stripes that form the top part of the logo… pantone should be pretty much bang on…..

Well I think my price is ok, for me anyway, I’m a one man band most days, also have lots of small orders that make up the rest of the days earnings such as Tshirts etc. Had o good weekend for online orders, so got casual labour in for next 2 days….. It fits in with my hourly rate scheduling so all good I’d say.

And being honest you guys have got many more years experience on me, that doesn’t come cheap, I’m still learning so prices reflect that a little, but on the whole I’m happy and making money :)… cheers everyone for your input it’s a really excellent reference point..

Job done, had to charge an extra £25 for cleaning when arrived, had a few bonuses though, the back shutter ended up being a tail lift and as you can see it was a flat luton and not a wind deflector, although I must admit the front was a pig to get too, had to end up using a neighbours forklift for a platform… improvise overcome and adapt…

Hope this doesn’t get modded to the portfolio section!

    Thanks again for everybody’s help

The lettering looks much smaller in the finished job then on the visual you originally presented. Did you reduce the sizes when you came to actually do the job or was the van body bigger then expected?

Well the lettering is the same size as the original image I put on here but that wasn’t the final artwork, we had to reduce the size of the logo to fit in-between the rather large and rusty damn rivets….

The van was in quite a bit more of a dilapidated state than expected so we had to make a few compensatory changes at the last minit.. customer was happy though, they booked in a trailer and a smaller van for next week.

    Happy days

This is not meant as a criticism – but to be constructive.

The original layout looked much better. The reason why it looks better is because the space between the blocks of lettering and the logo aren’t as large. This is called "negative space" and is an important consideration when doing layouts. Your final design would have looked much better if you had moved everything in closer together increasing the margin space around the outside instead of increasing the spaces between the groups. A good rule of thumb is to ensure the spaces between the groups are always less then the margin space around the outside

But well done for doing the work and showing it here

Thanks Phil, I can definitely see what you mean. I’ll carry that forward… Maybe one day the mrs will buy me "Mastering Layout" it was promised for my birthday, got the money from the family but ended up putting fuel in the van so I could get to work…..lol

It’s been a long hard struggle but I think I’m getting there cheers for the advice mate….. should have read your book again! It’s by the bed… will have a look tonight
