• PRICE INCREASES

Posted by Kevin.Beck on January 1, 2004 at 1:15 pm

Just poped down the shop to pick up the mail, been away to mexico over the holiday. ( Had to keep fighting off GreenPeace, as they kept trying to drag me off the beach, and back into the water) 😆

    Got loads to sort out.

    A few got binned.
A few were brochures etc. Saved them.

But, must have got 6 from companys telling of price increases. Any thing from 4 – 7% increases.

We`ll all get these letters, but what do you all do, take it on the chin, all find other suppliers, or just pass on the increase to the end user?

I had a similar increase with a car magazine I regular advertised in, last year.
Got the usual call, asking if any change was needed for the next copy, and by the way the advert had been increased by 10%. ( I already pay £1200 per year)

Told them sorry, I`ll stop advertising with them. Straight away got it down to only 5% increase.

I then told them ok, but I`ll only advertise in every other issue (comes out every month). Phone went silent for a bit, “ok just I`ll make a special exception for you, as you`re such a good client, and keep the rate same as last year.”

So if you get a similar call, tell them you`ll look else where. They know it`s better to loose the increase and keep your business, than loose the account all together…

I’ve also had that with national media groupd. Its gets very interesting results if you can keep your nerve with them and say “no problem – we can take our budget to X” – you find your phone rings very quickly for the senior advertising manager offering a good deal.

The best we have managed so far (no names) is a national weekly, full colour page normal rate card £2000 down to £375. Not the best response but a good discount none-the-less.

What are other poeples thoughts on passing the increase to clients, we try as hard as we can to maintain current material costs by changing manufacturer / distributor before passing on to clients?

I got a call from another supplier just before xmas.

they asked me what i was paying from my current supplier, within 60 seconds, they had shaved £`s off their prices and beaten (all be it by just a £1) what i was paying.

then i said i don`t pay for postage (theirs was £10 per order) and sure enough, theirs became free of charge too….

don`t take the price increases on the chin. duck and dive, and come back with a uppercut. (:) (:) (:)
