    Hi All.

I am after some advice on pricing up a job, and the fitting of it.

It`s 16ft x 3ft. 3 sections, White foam board (5mm), straight forward lettering. 2 colours(no more that 5mtrs of 7 year calendered vinyl, screwed & capped to an existing frame. Approx 35ft high. It`s the high thing I`m having probs with.

Do I put on extra for the height(danger money)?
Am I best with a tower or what?

any help/advice would be most appreciated.
    Becky 😀

    Hi Becky
As A guide I would price as follows
    16 x 3 = 48 sq feet no frame so 48 x £7.50
+£100.00 to cover Scaffold and extra time and labour to errect etc

Id want probably go in at £450 + vat fitted

x 2 man Hours to cut weed and mount £30.00
    x 2 8 x 4 Foam Board £45.00
    X 5 M 1220 vinyl £15.00
Fixings and App tape petrol use of tools etc £30.00
iv got one now but if you have to hire one allow about £50.00 For tower Hire
    x 3 Hour Fitting 2 men max 6 man hours £90.00

    Total £260
£450.00 – £260.00 = £190.00 For the wife to spend in NEXT at the Weekend.

Or if you could do 2 a day for five day’s week for a year
£98,000 I could get out of bed for that

    Hope this helps

    Neil………….

I suggest you hire a cherry picker for the day. If you’re not sure what this is see the pic below:-

Our local hire shop charges 50 pounds + VAT a day for one of these. Add this to your costs (plus a mark up) and pass it onto your customer.

Don’t take any risks working at height is very dangerous so make sure you use a safe method to install the sign. Don’t try and cut corners to minimise the cost – a ladder at that height is out of the question.

If you’ re not happy about working at this height – I suggest you pass the job on.

Kevin, the best way to price a job like this is to speak to people local to yourself, try and find out what other sign companys in your area are charging. The reason I say this is because the price differences around the country can be quite staggering. If I were to charge 450 for a job like this then I wouldnt get any work at all, but Neil is in London where the cost of living is much higher.
I dont know if there are any group members in your area but if there arent then you could try doing what I did when I started. I had a few of my freinds call some of the local sign companys and ask for prices for various jobs, this gave me an idea about where to pitch my prices.
As for the height thing I wish you could charge danger money but unfortunatly I dont think the customer would wear this. You could do this job off of ladders 35 feet isnt that high, but you are always best and safer with a tower. Dont forget when you work out your man hours that it is going to take longer with a tower as you have the time to errect and dismantle the tower.
Is there a reason why you are doing it in three sections? as 16′ would be 2 x 8′ x 4′ boards. You might want to check the price of a 3mtr x 2mtr sheet as you could get it out of one sheet and this might be cheaper than 2 8 x 4s. Most suppliers will cut it for you if you cant cut a large sheet yourself as well.

Hi Again Just seen Martins post.

Health & safty Regs state that ladders are only to be used for acess anything over 2 mtrs its a scaffold tower im afraid.
I dont Know if the law is different with you martin
But the days of the customer not wanting these costs is going to be very short lived I’m afraid. And I Know that someone whos willing to take short cuts can underprice you, so let them do it cause you dont bounce far if you fall and your insurance wont pay if you didn’t follow the rules.

    quote martin:

You must be joking Martin!! 35ft is eleven metres – Have you never stood at the top of a 10 metre diving board? – that gives you an idea how high it is 😕

OK Phill so 35 feet is quite high but I have done jobs like this off a set of ladders in the past which is why I said you should use a tower or something like a cherry picker. I dont have a fear of heights at all so was perfectly happy but in hindsight its probably not very safe and given the choice would not do it again.

You could do this job off of ladders no problem but why should you, all you are doing is saving a client money. You are only going to make, 30-50 pounds of the hire in mark up?? If you use a ladder how are you gonna hold the sheets? A good gust of wind and you are dead or even worse badly injured and out of work for weeks.

All for the sake of some tight fisted git who wouldn’t pay the extra £80 for you to do the job correctly.

Dont give them the option, the law says you cant use a ladder and why the hell should you.
