• preventing warping

Hi, i have just been asked to cover two wall signs with some sort of clear perspex/acrylic in order so stop young kids picking off the vinyl. The signs are 3 mm black foam 300mm x 2000mm and have been screwed directly into the wall and i assume glued on the back. Can anyone tell me the best way to cover these signs, material/fixings etc. I was thinking of using clear acrylic although I’m worried that if i simply take out the existing screws, make my holes and attach the acrylic in the same way that I’ll get terrible warping once the sun gets on it

    any ideas

Mark, I probably wouldn’t use acrylic for a job like this. Acrylic is quite a brittle material and if something fairly heavy were thrown at the signs then it would crack or shatter.
You really need a polycarbonate like Lexan for this sort of job.

I agree with Martin. Polycarbonate is the way forward.

You might need to seal the edges up to prevent water getting between the two surfaces. If you don’t the sign will turn ‘misty’ the water condenses and makes the sign unable to read.

Cover the signs in clear vinyl. With a sign of that size the kids will soon get bored trying to pick it off. We do it with the community signs that we make.

I agree with nik, clear vinyl laminate or polyester anti graffiti laminate if thats going to be a problem as well.

Give the customer the choice, covering with clear vinyl is obviously the cheapest way to do the job but you will still have clearly defined edges for the vinyl lettering and someone with sharp nails could still have a good go at it if they wanted to.

    Hi all

Thanks for the advice. looking at the signs they are in fairly good condition so i could get away with just using a layer of clear vinyl over the top, Ill see what she says this afternoon, might have the same picking it off concern though. I thought acrylic wouldn’t be any good, its awful stuff, just happens that i have some large off cuts lying around but wanted advice before i went ahead and did anything.

    Thanks again
