I’m sure on here i saw someone mention pre masked vinyl coming from the supplier,

i’ve just been asked to do a double decker, the guy wants to match a paint to a dark blue vinyl, and spray in all the joints where the rivets are, and tween the windows, i’ve then gotta fill in about 40 varying size panels inbetween the painted areas, and eventually, each of these will carry a sponsors name,

i’d thought initially of subbing the work out as i cant cut up to 1m (biggest width req’d), but this is silly, everything is square / rectanglier, so i could just turn up on site and cut away by hand ! only need a couple of treliss stands and an 8×4 sheet of ply, armed with my scalpel, a straight edge and a squeegee i could prob be done in a day !

but, rather then mess and tape each piece of film i cut, is there a supplier i could ask that WILL premask a 50m x 1200 roll of decent vinyl for me ????

3M do it here mate, but they charge thru the nose! Any profit in the job, you may as well deposit in their bank account!!

Anyone with a laminator may be able to help, but 50m would be a bit risky in one stretch I’d think.

    Worth an ask tho.

there’s no real reason i couldn’t mask it on site, just thought the time saved would probably offset the cost,

    thanks anyways !

You could do it without tape drag on!
Tape is only there to keep the bits together.

i’d thought of that, but then remembered when i sold some coffee machines last year, i wanted to cover over the original branding on the sides, now, do you think i could get those flat square pieces of vinyl down flat ?!!?!?!?!?

i just like the way that the tape keeps it a little more rigid when getting the first edge down.

If you do big sheets of tape tho lynn, premask will help it not to stretch, if you lack the experience of that sized application.

I am curious why he is painting anything at all drag on, I’d thought that a good quality cast would go over the rivets etc, negating the need for paint. If he is going to paint the little bits, why not paint the lot?

Its fine if you make sure that you put a 50mm masking tape edge on first,
Also if there are no shapes or recesses you could do it wet without the tape. This will keep the vinyl cool and lessen the stretching risk.

the job is for a guy i know, kinda returning a favour, the bus has been bought by a local horsey society that his mrs is involved with, it is not that new, about 20 yr old, so the joints want rubbing down and spraying in anyways as the paint is flakey around those joins.

he wants to do this the cheapest way poss, it’s more for education reasons and will be sited permanently at the south of england show ground,

i’ll be on an hourly rate for this job, i had considered wrapping it, but i’m unsure of my ability to do this, especially by myself and trying to peel all that backing off on a 10mtr run on my own, especially when i do the 8ft up and 13 ft high strips !

i genuinely figure it will be quicker for me to fit panels, than to attempt to cover about 3000 rivets and raised joins and risk a major failure,

i know i’ll have to cope with rivets one time or another, but this is not what i had in mind !!
