• Possible Scam?

Posted by Paul Goodwin on December 10, 2004 at 8:45 am

    Hi all

just recieved a letter today ( pretty official looking form but no booklets ect as u normaly get to explain things ) to do with teh DATA COLLECTIONS SERVICES (ENFORCEMENT SECTION)

basicaly a document to fill in for data protections act. fill it in send it back to DCS with a nice £95 cheque, it recons it’s illegale not to be part of the register ect.

not telephone number to call only a address and envelope ( supply own stamp) to post off to

has anyone else had one of these and is it a scam? going to get it taken down to the council later to have checked out but it feels dodgy to me

yeah, but not for a couple of years sounds excatly the same thing.

It is obviously really important and should be filed accordingly, the bin.

    Hi Mort

Yes, it is a scam. I have had 2 copies of that official looking form now. The last one I got this week. Called the Data Protection Agency office – check local phone book – and they said that there are about 40 business doing this scam.

A very nice lady asked me some question’s about my business and told me that from that information I gave we should be exempt, so I just put the form back in the envelope – no stamp – and sent it back to them saying that we were exempt.

Either send it to your local Trading Standards Office or do what I did or throw it in the bin.

    Regards
    Lee

We received one yesterday, postal address was in Merseyside. I put it straight in the recycling bag. We get a couple every year! Fee has gone down though the last one we had was £150 this time it was £95 👿

Its definately a scam Paul, I managed to get a hold of the phone number for them, rang them up and although they answered the phone as DCS, all of a sudden they weren’t DCS, they were a computer management agency with no knowledge of what I was raving on about.

Ignore it, throw it in the bin, or do what I did, send them an A3 sized photocopy of a cheque (with details smudged out) and sign it Mickey Mouse 😀

    Cheers, Dewi

    Hi guys

yep trading standards say it is a SCAM , but it does hold some truth, If you hold any information re indeviduals/ companies on your computer ect u do need to register with trading Standards which costs £35 a year,

so this is a company which will register for u and charge £60 for the privallage, soem companies charge up to £150 for this.

these are the official people that will tell u IF u need to register

    Information Commissioner
    Wycliffe House
    Water Lane
    Wilmslow
    Cheshire
    SK9 5AF

    01625 545740

this is the info trading standards gave me

also if it’s an official letter it will be pre printed or franked, not a 2nd class stamp lol

    the addy for DCS is

    DCS (ENFORCEMENT SECTION)
    CITY BUILDINGS
    21-23 OLD HALL STREET
    MERSYSIDE
    L3 9BS

send all your spam to them 🙂

As Lee Has already suggested I would send it back to them with no stamp, they would have to pay the postage just in case it had a cheque in !!
If enough people did this they might stop sending them out.
