    Hi
thought i would shown a couple of aluminium pole & plank signs i recently made. Cost wise works out approximately half the cost of buying in the same as blanks and with the benefit of having half the ali sheet left for the next ones to be made.

    Hope you enjoy

76mm poles machined with cut out to accept 6mm ali panel, this was done on a flat bed router after making a temporary jig to hold the poles still.

Assembled without top caps & spacer sections

    Pic 5
Assembled unfinished & top caps fitted which were also machined on the router from off cuts of the 6mm ali.

Finished rear view, counter sunk bolts which go through box section spacers & screwed into threads tapped into 6mm plate.

Well done Kevin, thanks for posting.

Much more satisfying, I’m sure, than lifting the phone and ordering from…?

How much of a cost saving to do it in-house ?

thanks for the comments, these where made at half the cost of buying them in. I prefer earning money making them myself than paying for some one else to be paid to make them.

Plus you do get a whole lot more satisfaction when you see the completed sign

You should offer your services to the ‘trade’.

Advertise on UKSB, understand a few signmakers go on there 😀

Seriously tho – why not ? The quality looks good.

i do a small trade service already mainly in print & sometimes a bit of machining but prefer earning at retail rates, rather than trade rates.

Nice if you have the kit to do it Kevin but not cheap to set up for that sort of work.
Why did you use 6mm ali for the panels? Just curious as I am guessing it will increase the costs a bit.

Great work Kevin – well done

But who’s the fella above? – You’re not Martin?…When did you kidnap and start impersonating Martin?…. You’re not fooling me, what have you done with our Martin? 😕

Nice one, do you do the powder coating aswell? Would love to be able to do that or even have somewhere nearby to do it!

6 mm panel was used to to match existing signs already in place and 6mm is required so that the panels don’t bend if someone leans against it etc. Regards the machinery i do have the cnc router but it could have been done with normal hand power tools.

    Gavin
don’t have facilities for powder coating ourselves but have access to the our neighbor’s powder coating plant so can get anything powdered. I also wet spray a lot of panels which although messy can increase the value of ali composite signs greatly when someone wants a specific colour. Where in the country are you based?

    Phil & everyone
    cheers for all the comments

That makes a lot of sense Kevin, hadn’t thought about people leaning on them to be honest. Be quite a bit more work to do it with hand tools though, especially cutting the panel. I’ve got a panel saw but it will only cut up to 3mm ally so no good for a job like that.
Thought you had powder coating facility as well but if it’s just next door it’s almost as good.

Anyway, as has been said great looking job and nice description of how you achieved it all. Plus like you say so much more satisfying when complete never mind the cost saving :lol1: :lol1:

Hi Kev, were up in the back of beyond with a nasty post code that doesn’t easily allow sending stuff out for powder coating! We’ve got good local fabricators but the powder coating hassle means we don’t use them as often as we could.
