• Plotter problems

Errr, after having a near flawless week using our Mimaki CG-FX plotter it wants to misbehave all of a sudden. We are cutting a job right now with fairly simple cut lines on Avery Blue Reflective A7822-R. Using a 50* blade with a .30 offset. I have tried cutting this job with FineCut, SignLab & Flexi. All the text is converted to outlines/curves, there aren’t any open paths and all of them have somewhat of the same problem.

When I am cutting this job, the text on some of them is overlapping. Others the letters are not being fully cut and on others they are being mis-aligned and off center. The odd thing is….it doesn’t happen to all of them, just some id say out of the 36 we ran so far 24-26 of them are fine. Its very costly material however so I would like to end this problem ASAP and know what is causing it to avoid it for the future. Thank you in advance.

This may sound daft, but is it possible the material is slipping? I have had this happen with reflective before with the same results you are describing. I cleaned the grip rollers and it fixed it.

    Worth a try.

    Andy,

In my experience in this industry. . . anything and everything is possible, I will check them out to see how they look, im pretty sure the fellas keep them clean but I’ll give them a quick once over; appreciate the quick response.

Hmm, rollers are very clean. Maybe the speed was too high? I was cutting it slower then normal vinyl, however what speed settings does everyone else use for reflective? Although I have never had this problem in the past with it.

Try dropping the speed to 300mm/sec or lower. Does this reflective have a gloss coating over it (like LG stuff?).

    Dave,

Right now we were cutting them out at 20cm/s which i believe is 200mm if im not mistaken. There is a gloss finish to this material but I think this speed is slow enough wouldnt you? Especially with 3 pinch rollers in use.

    I’m with Andy.

We get this problem with longer runs on our Mimaki when cutting laminated prints and I have put it down the the material not getting a grip on the rollers.

What I want to do, whenever I can find the time, is to see if it is possible to reduce the blade acceleration and try it at a lower setting. I think that will cure it.

Im going to try to run them in 36" sections and see if the length of the run is affecting the way its being cut. In the past ive run jobs up to 120" in lengths but maybe this reflective is going to be a pain =P
