  • please help having trouble importing EPS files into Signlab?

Hi everyone. Just bought my vinyl sign business (3 weeks ago) and its been a case of sink or swim – pleased to say I’m not sinking – however have a query which I am hope someone will know the answer to.

My business came with Singlab ES2 Version 5 Rev. 12 and it has a strange quirk (or maybe its just me!!). I have trouble importing EPS files. Some files import perfectly and others don’t import at all. Is it something I’m doing/not doing, or is there a simple explanation for it? I have spoken to the guy I bought the business from and he said he had same trouble which he never got to the bottom of.

    Thanks in advance!javascript:emoticon(‘:)’)

There are lots of different versions of EPS files. Your software is quite old (about 6 or 7 years) It may be the EPS files you are trying to import are too new a version. Also you have Signlab ES2 which is a fairly basic version which won’t help.

Do you have Corel Draw or similar? if you don’t it *may* be worth getting a copy. You can them import into Corel & it will be easy to get it to Signlab from there.

Thanks Brian – I had my suspicion this might be the case. I’ve recently purchased Adobe Illustrator – (which I just haven’t had the time to find my way around) I can import latest version EPS files into this but again it won’t talk to my Signlab. I guess the next best step is to upgrade/update my software which I assume wouldn’t be too difficult – I’ll check out the CAD website and see what my options are. Thanks again for your help.

When working with Illustrator files, you will have to save them at a lower version…I think it is Illustrator 8.

You can then open these straight into Signlab ES2 without any problems.

    Hi Brian,

Based on your description, I believe that Chris is correct to suggest saving/exporting at an earlier version. Here are some notes to help you out with AI and EPS files:

    • As a general rule, you want to export the AI file as no later than an Illustrator 8 version.
    • With respect to EPS files, there is quite a bit of variation in how a given application will export their EPS file objects.
    • You see certain applications with the ability to "Save as" or "Export" earlier versions of Illustrator files. In the case of Adobe Illustrator CS, you actually need to choose File | Export, and then set the file type = Illustrator Legacy (AI).
    • Likewise, Illustrator CS has File | Export option to set the file type = Illustrator EPS (EPS).
    • In Illustrator CS2, the save options have been reverted to as they were in Illustrator 10, where you would choose File | Save As, set the file type as either AI or EPS, click Save, and then you have a drop-list to choose what legacy version.

Regardless, definitely talk to CADlink sales, explain your setup and the type of work you’re doing, and get their advice. I suspect that your options will be either status quo, an updated version of ES2, or upgrade to SignLab Vinyl or Vinyl Pro.

Also, I would strongly recommend that you skim over the Illustrator Help files to give yourself a good overview of the available tools. Just focus on what features you have available, so that you can reference how to use them in a pinch.

    Cheers,

    Rod

Thanks Chris for your input and Rod for expanding on Chris’s suggestions/help. Appreciate you all taking the time to respond. Will definitely make that call in the morning and see what my options are but gut feeling is I need to upgrade to Signlab Vinyl at least.
    Thanks!
