I’ve been asked whether I can letter a tent type of thing, its about 25ft long so its quite a task, but would I be able to use banner vinyl on this or is there another type of vinyl more suited to the task?

I’ve shown the customer a banner and he seems to think its a similar material, only the tent would be folded away rather than rolled, so I’m a bit concerned that the lettering may come away 😕

    Cheers, Dewi

    Be careful Dewi.

We did one recently which was made of a woven type of material. The problem was that it was coated with something nasty to which nothing would stick. We suggested, and the customer accepted, that we put the graphics onto banner material and then sew these to his tent thingy.

If it is a banner type pvc then perhaps you should consider truck vinyl. You will probably lose the job on price to somebody who will do it in banner material but, believe me, the aggravation isn’t worth cutting corners for.

Dewi – Im interested in this as I have been asked to do one also, its a 3m x 3m marquee type tent in a cavass type material, I was thinking of using Graphityp – graphiflex which is I think suited to this, although normally applied with a heat press I have had success in the past using a regular Iron.

I would like to know what others think
    😕

Not hijacking John, the painting does sound to be a better option, I’d like to know the type of paint as well, sounds alot easier than having to replace failed vinyls at a later date.

I did a tent last year and it sounds like the same sort of thing.
The material is a woven nylon with a coating, the coating seems almost slippy like its got wax on. A good clean with solvent seemed to help.
Anyway I did it with banner vinyl and then heated it up with a hair dryer, seemed to do ok for the shows last year but I’ve no idea what winter storage has done. I told them that I didn’t think it would last and they could help by making sure they didn’t fold the letters.

The best option is a light banner material sawn on as John said as I’m not sure how the material will take paint.
