• pin stripes????

Posted by Kevin.Beck on September 9, 2004 at 7:40 am

I`m looking into re-producing some old car decals.

Reproducing the main decal is no problem, but I want to provide the body pinstripe as well.

It has to be 3mm wide of 1 colour, then a 2mm gap and then a 2mm stripe of another colour.

The colours have to be a certain shade, so I have to sorce various vinyl manufacturers for them.

Has anyone got a manufacture who can either provide all the above or just put together the pin stripes.

    many thanks.

Can’t you do it on your edge?

    Hi.
I can’t find the link to the place I usually use.
    They’ve changed their name.
But I did find this….maybe it will help.

The place I like used to be called this.
They have all kinds of 3M striping tape in
various widths and colors and they sell wholesale
    to the sign trade.
Maybe once it stops raining, I’ll venture out to the garage
and see if I have their number and new name written down.
We have residual rain from hurricane Frances!

A company called autac or Fineline converting as they are now known used to do striping for the auto repair industry and had just about every stripe combination used on cars as far back as 70’s models, I still have the catalogue but don’t know if they still do them. You can try them on 01604 670700.

Bit unlikely, they went bust last July. Still, it saves you a bit of shelf space – you can chuck our old catalogue away! 🙂

I’ve had a few people come to me to repair old stripe kits. The ensuing difficulty in matching the colours usually leads me to offer to replace the whole kit. The stripes we made at Autac/Fineline for the oem market were made up of a massive range of vinyls, and some colours were often screen printed to exact references.

need to be certain colours, no spot colours are close. if they were, I would have to print onto clear and add a primer to get the dencity, which adds to the cost.

    cmyk would be too exspencive.

I`ve found a supplier, but they only use a certain make of vinyl, the colour/s I want, they don`t offer…..

can’t you screenprint the colour onto vinyl, then cut it out with your plotter? if using pantone I know this would too be expensive, just another option 😉

I`m doing this for the main decals ( screen printing onto clear, then contour cutting them with my new summa…)

The pin stripes need to be 4 metres long, thats one big screen 😀

    thanks for the input folks.

Do the pin stripes need to be in one length of 4000mm?

what is the average length of a panel? We get specialty lines screened here, with the average length being 2000mm. We can then use the panel joins as a break in the stripe. Does that make sense?

    Cheers

    OR
You could get a few rolls of 3M fineline masking tape,
lay out the lines, and using the tape as a mask/guideline,
    PAINT the stripes!
    Now THAT’S a novel idea.
And paint is easy to mix into any shade you like,
and would cost less than vynull and you could charge
    MORE!

yes, it makes sense, but they are for the end user to apply. I`ve got to make it idiot proof to avoid comeback.

    Try http://www.salautodesign.com/

The woman that owns the company is Sharon, really switched on.

I am pretty sure they have long screens, don’t know if they are 4000mm tho.

Sal Auto supply kits to the auto and caravan industry, and do custom designs for ongoing orders.

    Cheers
